I always wondered how Chrissy Hynde of The Pretenders, who actually said she hoped the US loses in Iraq, felt about her song becoming the Rush Limbaugh theme (that bass line).

Does she just shut up and collect the royalty checks? Or is it some kind of “fair use” not subject to royalties? Or can she not do anything about it, because the record company owns the recording?

I dunno.

Lefty or not, Mellencamp certainly has a right to ask someone he doesn't agree with to NOT use his songs. I know I wouldn't want a Democrat to use any song I wrote (hypothetically, of course!) as part of their campaign.

To me this raises the question of how McCain's campaign could be so ignorant as to use this flaming liberal's song as part of the campaign. Then again, maybe it's just par for the course!

Did MellenHead actually write the music, or is he just another pretty singer?

He should be using country music, not socialist commie phonies like MELONhead.
Everytime I here that damn song for those truck ads I puke.
Mellankamp singing patriotic songs is like Godzilla promoting urban renewal.

Wasn’t she the one who said, “I hope the muslims win”?

Disgusting.

John Cougar Mellencamp is so ‘80s. Why would someone want to use one of his songs? They’re not old enough to be cool again.

Something like that. FDR would probably have barred her from the country for making such statements.

Also, now that I think of it, I caught a Pretenders concert in college back in 1980 or 81. They were by far the worst band I’ve ever seen. For what it’s worth.

Someone asked Rush that once and he said it was a jab at her for her political views. I think he doesn’t have to pay as it is just an excerpt.

Chrissy Hynde’s parents are HUGE Rush Limbaugh fans. Rush pays Chrissy half a million a year to use that music for his program. The fact that the words to “My City Was Gone” are never used protects Rush from copyright violations.

If there is no copyright violation Rush would not have to pay anything. Knowing his mercenary tendencies, I doubt that he's paying out of the kindness of his heart. That being said, one doesn't avoid copyright violations by not mentioning the title of the song.

As much as I detest Mellencamp & his politics that’s not an unreasonable request. McCain should have known better.

Actually, after years of not saying anything, that jab from Rush made her come after him. They worked out a deal where Rush pays out to PETA, believe it or not.
