McCain's Arizona Problem
Real Clear Politics ^ | February 5, 2008 | Reid Wilson

John McCain will win all of Arizona's allocated delegates when polls close this evening. But come November, and even earlier if the Republican primary race continues beyond today's primaries, the Copper State could become a serious albatross around his neck.

McCain's legendary temper and maverick streak have irked members of the GOP on virtually all sides. No one knows that better than those who should be his biggest backers, the top leadership of the Arizona Republican Party. Instead, they are some of his most ardent foes, and McCain's actions earlier this year have done little to assuage their anger.

"The Senate immigration bill put everything into a complete tailspin out here," said one top Arizona Republican who didn't want to be named in order to offer an honest portrait of the situation. After McCain's strong support for comprehensive immigration reform, a bill on which he worked with Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy, some in the state Republican Party made it their goal to derail his entire campaign.

One of those opponents is Rob Haney, chairman of an important legislative district for the Republican Party in the state's Southwest corner. "[McCain] has been disregarding us for years," Haney said, "siding with liberals against conservatives for years." Haney, whose district reaches to the U.S.-Mexican border, says that on issues beyond immigration, McCain is an unreliable vote. "When you take your chance with John McCain, you come out the big loser."

As McCain stands against everything we Arizonans stand for (he’s for amnesty, we kicked out the illegals / he’s against tax cuts, we’re for them / et cetera), I remain hopeful that McCain will not get Arizona’s delegates...and his losing his home state will be the death knell for that liberal RINO’s campaign.

If McCain is nominated, Arizona will soon be known as the Mexican Territory of New Arizona.

People who write about McCain who are not from Arizona do not know the Republican voters here. It is not the R’s who vote for McCain, it is the I’s and D’s and VERY FEW R’s who vote for McCain.

I will be surprised if McCain wins here.

Does AZ have a closed Republican primary?

Only R’s can vote on the Republican ticket.

Sounds similar to Al Gore,
couldn’t win his home state,
lost the election.

Don’t forget that McCain was an original member of the Keating Five. Along with the ethical and conservative luminaries Alan Cranston (D-CA); Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ); John Glenn (D-OH); and Donald W. Riegle, Jr. (D-MI), McCain was the only Republican. I posted a thread on this earlier today that simply disappeared from FR. Someone apparently doesn’t want this discussed.

Exactly. Why would they (the Repub Party) give him the Primary and then deny him the General. It does not make sense. Deny him up front in the Primary makes more sense if they are peeved, pi**ed, what ever at him.

If they give him one they will give him the other. Now that doesn't mean he gets enough Electoral College votes to win the Presidency.

It’s as if the republicans in charge are steering McAmnesty into a brick wall so that either socialist Hillary or Obama will beat him. “Short fuse McAmnesty” doesn’t have a hope in hell of beating either one.

The wife just got back from voting and she was amazed at how many P.O.'d independents were being turned away. From what she describes, they were all spanish-speaking. (Gee...I wonder who they were there to vote for...?)

I will be surprised if McCain wins here.

I will be incredibly dismayed. The pro-tax, pro-amnesty, anti-Second Amendment McChurian Candidate is so out of step with Arizona and America that it's not even funny.

“In Grayslake, Ill., registered Democrat Steve Greenberg, 39, decided his vote would be more valuable on the Republican side as he thought ahead to the general election. “I went with McCain because if the Democrats lost, I’d be more comfortable with him.” “

I can’t list a single thing that McCain has actually done for Arizona. Commendably, he doesn’t do earmarks, but the result is that he has done NOTHING for Arizona that I can point to since he was first elected.

In case you haven't noticed Jim Rob has apparently anointed John McCain, strangely enough even Senator Coburn of Oklahoma has endorsed him as well, strange I tell you.

"In case you haven't noticed Jim Rob has apparently anointed John McCain ......"

Since its his site I guess he can do whatever he wants, even if it is kind of dumb or devious. I will continue to work my way around it by continuing to mention McCain's membership in the Keating Five in post invoking his name.
