Second 40 Days for Life Campaign at Abortion Centers Begins Wednesday

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The second 40 Days for Life campaign begins on Wednesday and tens of thousands of Americans from across the country will participate in non-violent prayer campaigns outside abortion businesses. Pro-life people in 59 cities in 31 states will participate in prayer and fasting with the goal of ending abortions in their communities.

David Bereit, the coordinator of the campaign, tells LifeNews.com that the second 40 Days for Life hopes to build on the first one that saw babies saved from abortion and pro-life groups strengthened across the country.

"Many pro-life leaders are now saying that this focused effort could be the 'tipping point' that will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in our nation," Bereit said.

But, pro-life groups aren't the only ones noticing the effect of the local activities.

A Planned Parenthood CEO sent out a press release about 40 Days for Life and its effect, saying, "We know from past experience that these rallies and prayer vigils create barriers that deter our patients."

The campaign isn't about lawbreaking activism, but is focused on prayer and participation as pro-life people peacefully make their voices heard at local abortion facilities.

Bereit told LifeNews.com the idea has spread to other nations.

"We also are thrilled to announce that, for the first time, other countries will be joining with the United States for a unified 40 Days for Life campaign -- Ireland and Brazil will be conducting 40 Days for Life alongside America from February 6 to March 16," he explained.

Bernadette Smyth, of the Ireland pro-life group Precious Life, says the vigils there will be conducted outside abortion referral agencies in Belfast and Derry.

Precious Life says they hope their 40 day campaign will inspire more people who have never been involved in pro-life activities to come forward and join the pro-life movement.

"The level of enthusiasm about this 40 Days for Life is unprecedented, and it couldn't come at a more crucial time," Bereit concluded.

He cited a new study showing that abortion rates nationwide are at their lowest levels in decades and he hopes the campaign will further drive down the abortion numbers.
