Duke shows it's clueless [Duke Univ. hosts stripper show]
News and Observer ^ | Feb. 6, 2008 | Ruth Sheehan

Two years ago, the infamous Duke lacrosse case started with a group of lacrosse players hiring a pair of strippers to dance and otherwise "perform" at a rowdy house party.

Fast forward two years, to Sunday night. While the rest of the world watched the Giants defeat the Patriots in the Super Bowl, about 300 students and others attended the Sex Workers Art Show, in which strippers and prostitutes were hired to dance and otherwise "perform."

(snip)

The event was paid for by the Student Health Center, the University Fund, the Women's Center, Sexual Assault Support Services, the Women's Studies Department, Baldwin Scholars and Students for Choice. At $3,500 it was a steal.

(snip)

Did no one see the irony?

William Purdy, executive director of Duke University Student Health, had this to say: "The Sex Workers Art Tour was suggested and driven by student interest and was sponsored by numerous campus groups. It dealt with controversial areas, but hopefully gave viewers an understanding of an industry which most students know little about. It is hoped this was a worthwhile experience for those who chose to attend."

(snip)

There was a transvestite whose privates were covered with tape who crouched on all fours in a kiddie pool of glitter and stuck a lit sparkler in his bum while America the Beautiful played.

There was an overweight stripper who pretended to eat a bunch of dollar bills, then left nothing to the imagination as to the results of the digestion of such a meal. The next performer came out, picked up the string of bills onstage and waved it under his nose. Yick.

Sex Workers Art Tour - an industry which most students know little about.

Bet me.

The S.W.A.T. team is well understood by these folks, I bet.

The world is upside down in some ways. These colleges drive out those who would discuss the Bible and religious matters, fearing that somehow the Bible or religion will affect the students negatively.

Yet these same places want to open the students minds to other self expression, and be tolerant, yadda, yadda, yadda, to a pornography show. Why aren’t the colleges as open to discussing and presenting the philosophies of religious study and religious thought? If being “open and tolerant” is such a big issue, why?

Maybe somebody can 'splain to me what this has to do with sex.

On the other hand, please don't.

The very same people who were so sanctimonious about the players hiring a stripper — some even said that it didn’t matter whether or not the rape was actually committed — these same people produced this stripper show. Just when I thought that I’d plumbed the depths of radical feminist hypocrisy (their defense of B.J. Clinton for instance) — they surprise me again.

Oh, so you don't remember the decision a couple years back by the new president of the College of William & Mary to remove the 100-year old Wren Cross from the college’s 274-year-old school chapel in order to make it “more welcoming”....

My, you haven’t been paying attention. Didn’t you hear about the President of W&M banning the cross in the college chapel?
The president of William and Mary is a raving loony. See: http://www.dailypress.com/news/local/williamsburg/dp-news_sexshowreax_0206feb06,0,3878509.story

Sounds like the old "we're just trying to spark a discussion of an important issue" excuse again. When President Hillary is sending all those dissident conservatives off to re-education campus (or firing squads) I'm sure it will be to "stimulate debate and public discussion".

Now that you mention it, I do remember the removal of the cross from William and Mary. Getting old I guess.

IMO they fear the bible, which is different then they fear it will harm the students. The colleges are open to religion, just not Christianity.

"Did no one see the irony?"

Remember, we are dealing with liberal college administrators here, and they are among the most idiotic people on earth. Slack-jawed cretins.
