Time Warner (NYSE:TWX) Inc., the world's largest media conglomerate, reported lower earnings in its fourth quarter Wednesday following a big gain in the year-ago period on the sale of AOL's online access business in Europe.

Excluding the effect of that gain, earnings rose on stronger results at the company's cable TV and movie operations.

Time Warner reported net income of $1.03 billion or 28 cents per share, versus $1.75 billion or 44 cents per share in the same period a year ago.

Without the AOL gain a year ago and other one-time effects, the earnings were 29 cents per share in the most current quarter, in line with the estimates of analysts polled by Thomson Financial, and 23 cents per share a year ago.

Revenues rose 2 percent to $12.64 billion.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial, which typically exclude one time charges, expected 29 cents per share in profit on sales of $12.65 billion.

Time Warner to cut 15 pct of corporate costs
Wed Feb 6, 2008 10:49am EST

LOS ANGELES, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Time Warner Inc (TWX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) will “immediately” cut over 15 percent of corporate costs across the board to increase margins and profitability, Chief Executive Jeffery Bewkes said on Wednesday.

Bewkes told analysts on a conference call that the cuts would reduce the company’s run rate by $50 million a year. One of the company’s films studios, New Line Cinema, will also see near-term cost cuts, he said.

“We need to increase our current margins and profitability by better managing our costs, among other things, and on the costs side we’re going to do that across the company, and to set the right tone, we’re starting at corporate,” Bewkes said. I wonder if they ever considered producing a product that people will want to buy.

What do I want?

Almost NOTHING that is provided by the MSM. 80+% of all my television is comprised of History Channel, Food TV, Discovery Channel, & YES for Yankees Baseball. I rarely even watch Fox News. I come here for my news coverage. I resent paying for most of the channels that are included in my basic cable package.

I MAY go to two movies a year in the theater.

The only magazines I get are the NRA Rifleman and Cooks Illustrated.

I don't mind if others like something different from me. It holds down the prices for what I do like. The fact that the Dinosaur media is having financial troubles means that they are NOT providing enough of what people are willing to pay for.
