I think the sweet, soothing tones that many parents use with tantruming children is confusing to them. They can pay attention to the tone easier than the words and the tone implies consent.

I never had a problem using a firm voice, looking them in the eye and saying, "I know you want a cookie, but you cannot have one right now. No cookies before dinner."

But swaddling totally rocks!

I don't see where he is suggesting that you give the child the cookie. It sounds like he is more or less saying this will help the kid know you've heard what they said.

I don't necessarily agree the exact wording he is suggesting. I'd say, "I know you want a cookie now (short pause) but you can't have one until after dinner." Seemed to work for me.
