Don't underestimate McCain
Seattle Times.com ^ | February 7, 2008 | David S. Broder

WASHINGTON — The continuing drama of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination should not diminish what John McCain has accomplished on the Republican side of this campaign.

The senator from Arizona still has to finish off the challenges from Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, but after Tuesday's victories in such key states as California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey and Missouri, and a commanding lead in delegates, the question is when, not if, he will secure the nomination.

What is more, he has emerged — despite all the negatives of the George Bush legacy — as a serious possibility to win the presidency in November.

On Super Tuesday, I placed calls to knowledgeable Republicans, Democrats and neutral observers to check their appraisals of McCain as a general-election candidate.

Arizona's Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano, who sees her home-state senator at close range, said, "He is not to be underestimated." An Obama supporter, Napolitano said McCain is "a gifted campaigner with a great life story. When everything seemed to go wrong for him last year, I told people, 'Never write John McCain off.' "

Broder is like the straw man, if he only had a brain.

Now we must endure the flood of McCain apologists.

I suspect you think you sound enlighted and oh, so very principled.

But, you are showing yourself to be a lightweight and not at all informed about politics.

Like it or not, Conservatives are the minority in the Republican Party. We would have NO voice absent the GOP.

And in politics, you go to war with the Army you have...and despite the shortcomings, you still plan to win.

Because of you RINO herd types, you've doomed us to an unelectable choice. Thanks for nothing...

I am neither a Rino or a herd type. But, whether you like it or not, the choice is between Hillary and John McCain.

This was not my first choice, but it's the one I've been given. And, I will not let emotion stop me from participating in the selection process or fighting for a seat at McCain's "table".

Politics is not personal, it is a blood sport. I respectfully hope you can get over yourself and do what is best for our fighting men and women, our national and economic security, and choose McCain for our judicial nominees.

And, please...don't bother to quote chapter and verse from the "Hate McCain crowd" regarding any of these issues. John McCain is far superior a choice on these issues to the real enemy: Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Likewise. It is a win-win for them.

People like you are why Rome fell...

Unbelievable. I guess this is what Paine meant about "summer Patriots and sunshine friends."

A lecture from David Broder, to paraphrase a line from Sunset Boulevard, didn’t he used to be somebody in this town? An over-the-hill Washington insider journalist defends an over-the-hill Washington insider politician.

“Conservatives are the minority in the Republican Party. We would have NO voice absent the GOP.”

I thought I heard recently that McCain said that he couldn’t win without conservatives. If so, why are you denigrating conservatives?
This is a conservative site, not a GOP organ.

Don't underestimate McCain

Prudent advise.

Just like...
"Don't accept that garlic, a silver bullet and/or stake through
the heart will kill a vampire."

McCain's legacy: the Republican candidate that provoked a
record number of write-in votes for the Republicans he thought
he vanquished during the primaries.

Myself, I'll vote for whoever the Republican Presidential candidate
happens to be.

ONLY because the alternative of Hillary! or Osama bin Obama is
MUCH worse than even someone like McCain.

IMO, conservatives need to start shifting their concerns to national down-ballot races. Losing the WH is going to be bad enough although manageable but not if we lose any more seats in the Congress, which now seems likely, there won't be any stopping of McCrazy and his den of liberal-crazed minions nor the Hilldebeast or the Muslim Hussein Osama Obama (or is it Obama Osama?!).

The House and Senate will be the last wall of defense for this country, IMHO.

Nope. We have a better chance of stopping bills like amnesty with republicans in congress united against a real ‘rat than a turncoat RINO.

True words indeed!

majority of you didnt support romney anyways. rush and others got ticked off when mccain bounced back. Because of cfr, they dont like that bill for one specific reason. their mikes are shut off day of election. Here in pa, during election week local talk show hosts are not to discuss politics and try to influence the electorate in any way. election process is not respected the way it used to be that is why we get so many horrible candidates. and why republicans are acting like dems. republican conservatives are letting others pick for them and not doing your own homework. Mccain will make a fine president.
OK said my piece now its off to dinner with my husband Have a great evening fellow conservatives republicans , americans !

This is so transparent.

The media tools are building up McCain now.

They’ll be knocking him down after the conventions.

So predictable.
