LOS ANGELES - One veteran SWAT officer was killed and another wounded during a shootout with a man who called police and said he had killed three members of his family, police said Thursday.
The standoff with the barricaded gunman continued at 5 a.m., first-assistant police Chief Jim McDonnell said at a news conference.
The standoff started at 9 p.m. Wednesday when a man called police and said he had killed three members of his family, McDonnell said. When the SWAT officers arrived, there was a shootout and the pair were shot.

I'm waiting for the first paranoid sissy FReeper to make a "JBT" comment.
Like that fake "marine" jonascord.
I wonder how this could have happened SWAT is always so careful and professional....he must have surprised them when they first rolled up.
At least they didn’t taze the shooter. He might have been hurt.
LA SWAT does indeed seem to be very well-trained, but the killer may have either had some training too - or was perhaps just got off a lucky shot.

Always a tough call, they knew the risks though. Wonder what the odds are of the bad guy leaving upright.
During the tear gassing, a women hiding in the closet was able to escape the house and is now talking with officers on the scene.
Wow, that makes a difference. Did SWAT know there were hostages? Assume so.
That explains decision to enter dynamic.
When I awoke at 5 am this morning to Breaking news and still kinda of groggy. I though oh man its got to be Brittany Spears
But on a serious note Rip to that Police officer and prayers to all involved
The house is fully on fire and burning down.
Yep, that’s the “pyrotechnic teargas option.”
It’s all over...House fully involved. All helicopter traffic was told to back off....Only ground video available.
Body’s on the front lawn, dead swat officer, another in surgery... and hearing others have been shot....House fully involved, no chopper video..Told to get back...
This guy called 911 and told the cops...Come get me.
___________________________________________________________
Obviously the suspect was prepared...He told them on the 911 call to "come get me coppers".
God Bless those poor men. I’m not surprised if the perp dies when he kills a cop. Usually if you fight a cop...all his friends come around with their guns and it is usually a bad outcome.
I’ll admit that I’ve criticized SWAT screw ups, but if these guys went in to save a hostage...they’re a lot braver than I am.
I’m not saying that killing everybody in a house when you have to breach a door is easy, but if ROE make you hesitate for a split second when sometimes that’s all you’ve got.
Any ID on the perp?
I understand he told the 911 operator that he killed his entire family....There is still a body on the front lawn thats been there for hours...
No...Bits and pieces coming out now from the neighbors...Hearing a Hispanic female that spoke little English lived with the suspect...
One thing I can say, is this guy was prepared ..Very tightly wound...Ready to check out.
I too have done that...However, this appears to be tailor made for swat...This guy was clearly looking for a fire fight...
If the house is fully in flames, why is the news media prevented from showing footage?
Maybe to prevent the bad PR when ordinary folks might conclude that the ROE include burning up the perp?
Is it possible that the SWAT final solution SOP is indeed immolation?
Apparently so, making him a little different from the usual knucklehead dope peddlers LAPD SWAT has to take down.
I'm guessing the fire department will be slow to respond. Just a guess.
They got a handle on the fire, and now have FF on the roof...Lots of white smoke...At one point, so much smoke, it appeared fully involved....They must be confident this guy is no longer a threat.
I'm hearing they've been lobing in gas for 6 hours...Then the smoke and fire.
Yep, there is no doubt this suspect was looking for a brawl, and appeared to be somewhat ready for it.
It will be interesting to find out who the shooter was/is, what wound him up, and what FAs he was using..
I’m being told the suspect is in custody...I personally find that hard to believe.
I believe he’s dead in custody...
Probably in a shoebox.
Chief of Police Bratton is in British Colombia...How typical of these people running local government departments.
Just damn. We lost an officer here in Sacramento by a 16 year old thug a few days before Christmas. Prayers for them and their families.
Heard it again...Reporting suspect in custody.
Must have been a head shot. They usually have good torso armor. Sad. Hope they killed the POS!
2 reports now suspect is in custody via news radio...Kinda makes sennce due to the fact that once the home was on fire FF went up on the roof quickly...
Now hearing they are searching trucks of cars...
News conference coming up soon..
Er trunks of cars...
“Wonder if the perp is an illegal alien?”
This doesn’t sound like something an illegal would do. He might kill his family but wouldn’t make a date with the SWAT team. This is probably an emotionally disturbed white guy that wants someone to kill him.
Yes. It's not in their job description. The fire dept is set up for fighting fires, not fire fights.
Having been in almost exactly the same situation, I can tell you that the LAFD WILL NOT enter the building until the suspect(s) are fully controlled. You cannot imagine what happens in these situations, so why don't you just shut up and wait for the facts to come out. BTW, the news media do not have the facts.
Hundreds of rounds where exchanged...
Suspect murdered 3 others in the house....all 3 males....Swat officers attempted to remove one of the victims who was still alive when the swat members were shot.
SWAT saying this guy caused them major problems, moving around inside of the home, firing at officers.
10 to 1 it was a drug lab, they say the perp set the house on fire. After 6 hours of tear gas and no flames it wasn’t SWAT starting the fire.
When asked if this was a gang member...The commander stated, well lets just say this was a troubled individual....He avoided confirming this was a gang member....
I don’t think so.
Dopers not usually this dangerous. Stupid, which can be dangerous, but not tactically proficient. Not gangsters either.
First...any perceived prejudice is on your part.
Second...part of my post included intentionally sarcastic and rhetorical questions.
Third...your use of CAPS shows the anger within you.
Fourth...you would be surprised what I know, what experience I have and what I do for work. But it that information will never be posted in a public forum and I have nothing to prove to you, a stranger.
Fifth...regardless of outward circumstances, I do not drink the blue kool-aid.
And you sir do not shut me up in any way shape or form. You neither have the authority (typical cop thug mentality on your part showing through), nor the physical, or digital ability. So deal with it and get over your egotistic self.
Last, unless you were on-scene in this situation, your guesses are as good as anyone else’s. So please don’t try and come across as the police enforcer on all LEO truth and the facts of this story, because you don’t know doodly squat.
...see...I told you that you can’t shut me up!
Though I notice a couple of things about you...
1- your user name is intended to let everyone here know that your are a cop. Bad move. Big puffed up ego on your part. Most respectable LEOs maintain a low profile in public life so as to not come across as full time “cops”. There is, in the posture of a quiet professional, the humility that comes from knowing that you are a public servant. However, by publicly stating that fact in a public forum you desire to puff up your own ego by letting everyone know how important you are (in your own eyes) and that you are “the law”. It is a psychological attempt to make yourself superior to other non-cops/citizens. Your pride and ego shows loud and clear.
2-By telling total strangers to “shut up” your bully tactics are also showing and so too is your anger issue.
3-These two facts combined tell the casual observer that you are the kind of cop that folks would probably call a JBT. They (JBTs) puff themselves up and tell everyone what to do, when to do it, how to think and if the poor listener happens to disagree you’ll tell them to “shut up”.
Get over yourself.
News has the name of the suspect, but they have been advised to withhold that name for a while.
In that neighborhood, it's certainly a strong possibility. There are also a few Latino gangs in the area. The LA Times quotes a neighbor who said that "an elderly Latino woman lived there alone for as long as he has lived in the neighborhood."
I don't know if I'd be willing to completely accept that premise, let's ask the Branch Davidians about the dangers of highly concentrated tear gas and its propellant in enclosed spaces.

Ohhhh, a degree in psychology too. Wow, I’m impressed. Actually, I have been retired from that agency for a long time, hence the”ol”. Your off color “humor” betrays your deep seated animosity, but then you probably can’t bear to face that reality. The officer killed was a subordinate of mine very early in his career, and YES I AM ANGRY! Again YOU weren’t there. I have a VERY good understanding of the specifics of LAPD SWAT training...from the inside...so just go back to eating your fruit loops.
