NARAL president Nancy Keenan emailed her supporters early on Wednesday asking for money for a campaign to begin bashing John McCain for his pro-life voting record on abortion. She didn't waste any time in launching the attack as, later in the day, NARAL issued a press release blasting the possible Republican nominee.
Keenan said she's worried that some people on the conservative side who disagree with McCain on other political issues will make it appear to some voters that he's not "extreme in his opposition" to abortion.
"John McCain has a 25-year record of voting against women's freedom and privacy, and he has even gone so far as to call for the overturn of Roe v. Wade," Keenan said.
McCain served in the U.S. House from 1983 to 1986 and in the U.S. Senate since 1987. During that time, Keenan said her organization has given him only a 4 percent pro-abortion voting record -- including a rating of 0 from 2002 through 2007.
According to NARAL, McCain has voted pro-life 123 times out of 128 votes, for a 96 percent pro-life voting record.
Keenan said McCain has a "documented record of hostility toward" abortion and that, on pro-life issues, "McCain is neither a moderate nor a maverick."
"As we move toward the general election, NARAL Pro-Choice America will make sure that voters, especially pro-choice Independent and Republican women, know the truth about Sen. McCain," Keenan promised.
Despite her criticism, McCain has said he's proud of his pro-life voting record when it comes to abortion issues.
"I have many, many votes and it's been consistent. And I've got a consistent zero from NARAL throughout all those years," he told National Review in March 2007.
"And I think the important thing is you look at people's voting record because sometimes rhetoric can be a little... misleading," he added.
So I wonder what McInsane meant when he said that he thought women would be in danger if Roe v. Wade were overturned.
Looks like an image builder.
With the exits of my first (Fred) and second (Mitt) choices, it’s small comfort to know the pro-aborts are tossing cookies over McCain’s record on life issues.
I have to admire you for both your persistence and your message, Cindy.
Sometimes things need to said (or typed) out loud.
And over and over again. I’m with you.
Yes and thank you for understanding.
It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you
Nobody knows where my Johnny has gone
But Judy left the same time
Why was he holding her hand
When he’s supposed to be mine
It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you
Then all my records keep dancing all night
But leave me alone for a while
‘Til Johnny’s dancing with me
I’ve got no reason to smile
It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you
Judy and Johnny just walked thru the door
Like a queen with her king
Oh what a birthday surprise
Judy’s wearing his ring
It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you
Oh-oh-oh It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to.....
Maybe that sign can make some money at the gun shows.
Most uncreative. (yawn)
Let’s see now, NARAL is claiming that McCain is a threat to the so-called ‘right’ of women to murder their unborn children, NARAL welcomed and embraced Mayor Rudy at their ‘Champions of Choice’ breakfast so many moons ago and praised his pro-abortion stance, Rudy has now endorsed McCain (angling for that AG spot no doubt), so how fast will NARAL be spinning when somebody, somewhere points out this curious turn of events?
much funnier than a bumper sticker you might see at a truck stop, though
and seems custom-written, but the lyrics are original
I've had the same evolution in candidates -- but please explain what you mean.
Make up some bumper stickers, copyright it and you’ll make loads of moola there Cindy.
You go girl and great job.
who pissed in your corn flakes?
Know McCain, Know Pain
No McCain, No Pain
How about that?
Why is it that John McCain always has support from those who have “opposing” views. Naral is extolling his pro life stance, CNN extolling his conservative virtues...perhaps we could call in Justice Ginsberg to tell us how he would choose strict constructionist justices, or maybe Warren Buffet could start telling me how much Johnny supports tax cuts.
“...and we are going to make it happen.”
Actually, McCain will make it happen, in my opinion.
Quite honestly I do think conservatives need to unite and make our voices heard THIS election. Tossing aside our principles just because the other guy sucks will only make us more marginalized.
Fox had an analysis on this -- the liberal media likes him because he's always granted them access -- but when the primary is over, they'll turn on him, because they're mostly liberal and want the Democrat to win.
and the best part is, I can’t wait to see the befuddled look on McCain’s face when his “friends” start ripping him to shreds. Of course, it’s the only thing I have to look forward to now, but still, it’s something.

Can’t wait to see the dirt that the ny times is sitting on
1. Conservatives stay home and Hillary or Obama becomes President along with probably major defeats in Congress. The Clintons, who gave us Somalia, giving the enemy the courage to give us 9-11, or Obama will be leading our military whom they loath.
Taxes go up,spending goes up, amnesty still happens, Ginsberg is replaced with John Edwards or someone like him (you know young and liberal with 30 years ahead of him on the bench), abortion rights strengthen.
2. Conservatives vote. Congress holds steady, maybe we regain some strength. McCain leads our military whom he loves. Taxes stay even, spending goes down, amnesty may happen (like it would have if we didn't fight it through Congress anyway). Ginsberg is replaced with a moderate to Conservative judge. The real possibility of Roe vs Wade and McCain/Feingold being overturned happens.
Oh wait, there is a 3rd option. Conservatives stay home, McCain still wins and Conservatives become irrelevant.
How dare you post his voting record.
Don’t you people have any other way of defending your candidate besides posting his voting record?
/sarc
He had the audacity to say yesterday that “when he makes a vow to his country he keeps it.” I had to laugh and ask “yeah, like the vow you made to your first wife?” The MSM will have loads of fun with that story.
An ode to free republic Mitt Wits

Cry if I want to, cry if I want to

Cry if I want to, cry if I want to

Then Mitt kept his records out of sight
But leave him alone for a while

McCain also has high ratings from pro-life groups nad hte NRA, guess they are on also on the msm take right?
Yea, and that’s not the only story they’ll have loads of fun with. Expect a lot of Keating 5 updates, and stories on “drug problems”. I wonder if there is a “rehab” for Truth Modification Addiction.
I don’t believe I insinuated anyone was “on the take”, my friend. Perhaps you should “calm down”. Pardon me for not buying into NARAL’s exclamation of someone being “pro-life” and CNN’s declaration of someone’s conservative values. Just as I don’t trust McDonald’s to give me advice on healthy eating, or Bill Clinton to give me advice on remaining faithful in my marriage, I’m not taking CNN’s advice on who is conservative, nor will I listen to NARAL tell me who is pro-life.
While McCain has a pro-life voting record, very rarely does Congress make decisions with respect to abortion. McCain himself said in a San Francisco Chronicle article:”But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations.”
I guess, though, I just wear my conservatism on my sleeve like Justice Alitio.
I just looked at the Wikipedia article on John McCain. While it’s notorious for not always being accurate, if even 1/4 of the things mentioned are true, it will provide info for a new story every day for the rest of the campaign. There are just so many facets of his character that are questionable.
so you’re a democrat supporter?
“Pardon me for not buying into NARALs exclamation of someone being pro-life and CNNs declaration of someones conservative values.”
Perhaps you FRiend should calm down. I understand your reluctance to trucst NARAL or CNN so I pointed at pro-life and NRA ratings.
I doubt seriously that media will investigate the veracity of anything that paints McCain in a bad light, so anything on Wikipedia will be fair game.
Even without that, your’re correct, McCain has too many questionable character traits for me to vote for him.
Not exactly extolling; they're coming after him with the fury befitting the harpies they are.
I'm weighing the pluses and minuses of voting for McCain. For me and most conservatives, the latter outweigh the former right now. If he'd like to run as a Republican, McCain would be well advised to pick a stellar veep and give very specific assurances of programs and policies he'd push or scuttle.
At the least, we'd better bust our behinds to change the makeup of Congress. If McCain wants conservatives' votes, he'd better pick a gilt-edged veep and start campaigning as a Republican. The CPAC speech was a decent start.
Well, that does bring up a sore point. Wouldn't I be enjoined from bringing up his voting record late in the campaign under the provisions of McCain-Feingold?
For the last month people around here have been challenged for posting McCain’s conservative voting record score of 85 percent. (65 percent since 2000).
Most of us strongly disagreed with McCain Fiengold. But overall his record is much better than he gets credit for around here.
It's a valid point, at least with the media's fawning over him. From the article's first paragraph, though, I wouldn't say NARAL is extolling McCain; they're proclaiming an impending apocalypse if he's elected.
I think it's the recent defections (McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, Gang of 14) that trouble us the most. They haven't exactly burnished his credentials with anyone except Ramstad Republicans. (Jim Ramstad has been my Minnesota congressman for the last umpteen years.)
If you can't stomach John McCain, channel your support and energies to Republicans who do represent your values and who have treated the conservative base as allies instead of enemies. There is a new generation of combat veterans running for office who haven't made a career of trashing the base. Check out staunch economic, social and national security conservative congressional candidates like Iraq/Afghanistan veteran Eric Egland in California's 4th district. Check out the Vets for Freedom (vetsforfreedom.org) group for their endorsements.
Opposed to the amnesty bill? Republican Sens. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, Thad Cochran of Mississippi, James Inhofe of Oklahoma and John Cornyn of Texas all fought the McCain-Kennedy-Graham-Martinez-Bush open-borders disaster. All of those senators are up for re-election this year. Send them some money. Then send a few more bucks to the enforcement proponents on the House side, as well.
Picking someone like Jim Demint could send a healthy signal.
