An underequipped National Guard, combined with proposed cuts in homeland security funds next year, could spell "absolute disaster" for the New York region if a major hurricane or another terror attack were to occur, two New York officials warned Friday.
"You've got two crises converging," said Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington). "One is a presidential budget which underfunds the National Guard by about four billion dollars. ... Add that to the cuts in homeland security in the president's budget, and it spells absolute disaster for Long Island."
A recent federal report found that the National Guard lacked the equipment, manpower and planning to respond adequately to a natural disaster or domestic attack, in large part because it has been stretched so thin by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Heavy trucks and radio equipment are in particularly short supply in New York, officials said.

I dunno, last time I counted, there were plenty of those big boxed ugly looking beasts all over the roads, driven by nouveau rich liberals who just want to say "HAY, Look at ME !!! I'm so rich that I drive this ugly assed thing all over the place, and you don't!" /laughs
Aww, a bit late to worry over it now isn’t it?
No worries, Chuckie Schumer will save the day, WMD’s are illegal, they should be confiscated at the ports...
He thinks we can’t get along without NG?
NG definitely helps, but being able to take care of yourself is more powerful on a national level.
When the balloon goes up, those who cry Come Help Me are at a serious disadvantage.
As for terror attacks, the national guard in New York were at pre-911 levels and did not stop the attack.
terror attacks? This God forsaken state has been under attack for years at all levels of democrap and RINO control.
Herr Spitzer rules the roost and fears no one even when he goes bonkers and sends state police to do surveillance on the opposition.
Lately, I keep thinking we really are a reconstituted soviet socialist republic - when Russians (God bless them) seem to have lots more freedom than we have here...it’s time to move out.
I get confused. One week they’re telling us everything the President has done has made us less safe. Then the next week they tell us the Administration is “fear mongering” and exaggerating the threat for political purposes. This week the threat’s real again because it might reduce federal spending on New York. Who knows what next week brings.
Back during the 1990’s I recall a certain Democratic President that cut the National Guard. Clinton closed Armories, disbanded units, cut training and equipment. Not a single word of protest by the ones complaining today.
From what I have seen Bush is expanding the Guard. My unit is getting brand new equipment. When people look at the Guard and say there isn’t enough equipment they should understand that any shortages can be made up by borrowing from Army Reserve units and from Guard units in nearby states.
Hurricane Katrina the National Guard responded to a degree that no one could of predicted. They did one hell of a good job along with the Coast Guard and other military forces but the liberal media and Democrats never gave them any credit just blame.
Hahahahahaaa, no confusion intended, this is Nuu Yawk politics at its finest ;)
/sarcasm off
New York state has one one of the best trained and most viable State Guards in the country. The NY Guard can go a long way to taking care of things here at home.
The political whores in DMNA block the NY Guard at every turn. Every attempt is made to make it clear that the NYG is not wanted, even going so far as turning off the air conditioning when the NYG uses training facilities at NYS Camp Smith in July.
NY’s politicos can quit complaining about lack of National Guard availability since they don’t do a THING for their own State Guard.
Screw ‘em.
When was the last time the National Guard was called out to deal with ANYTHING in New York — especially Long Island, of all places.
