One niece just started at the university and I encouraged her Dad to get her into that kind of class. He seemed strangely disinterested in the idea so I bought her some pepper spray, showed her how to use it, and suggested she check at the school for a self defense (rape prevention) class.

My read on it was that Dad just couldn’t deal with the thought of his little girl having to defend herself in that manner. In other words, denial.

Do you know anyone who is currently or an ex Ranger, SEAL, Special Forces, Delta Team? Half an hour with one of those people will teach you how to walk away from an attack while the attacker is laying on the ground, dead or unconscious.

Knowing just a couple of moves is necessary in winning because they are totally unexpected by the attacker that they will almost guarantee a clean (no blood), quick (instant) win.

Winning is all frame of mind. Knowing that, you, the tiny woman in a dress, can cripple a big, hulking man with two blows of less than 20 pounds of pressure is difficult for most females to comprehend.

Instead of trying to protect your breasts, start swinging. Bust his nose with a solid punch, jab his eyes with your fingertips, break his Adam’s Apple while he is still congratulating himself on success that he actually has a hold of both of them.

Denial; it's not just a river in Egypt.
At the RAD class our daughter attended, there were some other Moms watching. At one point, the detectives told the girl who was working with them to close her eyes, so she wouldn't know what was coming. One of the Moms got upset about this, and asked why the detective would do that, as it was kind of upsetting for the girl. DUH! I told her, and the other Moms, the story of the four sorority sisters who were murdered by Ted Bundy at Florida State Univ. This happened when SirKit and I were living in Tallahassee, while he was getting his PhD at FSU. The girls were each awakened by him attacking them, and because they didn't have these skills, they were so disoriented, they couldn't fight back. Bundy had broken into a different girl's apartment earlier in the night, but she did have the skill to fight him off, so she survived. Having the skill to fight, even without being completely awake and aware is a good thing!
