GUNS AND SCHOOLS: THE POLITICS (McCain tries to grab guns, 1999)
NY Times ^ | 5/21/99 | Allison Mitchell

In the past two extraordinary weeks in the Senate, Democrats and gun-control advocates accomplished far more than any of them had ever thought possible. But for all of the celebration, the package they assembled was still modest, falling short of the proposals President Clinton offered after the Colorado shootings, much less anything as far-reaching as a ban on cheap handguns.

The Democrats did not dream of bringing up, for example, the President's proposal to limit individuals to buying one handgun a month. They lost an effort to limit gun sales on the Internet. And fearful that they could endanger final passage of the juvenile-justice bill if they overplayed their hand, gun control proponents stopped short of trying to restore a waiting period for handgun purchases, a part of the 1993 Brady law that has since expired.

''No one has ever said this is the last thing on guns,'' said Senator Tom Daschle, the minority leader from South Dakota. ''This was the most realistic approach we could use, given the circumstances today.''

In the last two weeks, Republicans lurched from position to position, as their first efforts to stop the Democratic measure to require background checks at gun shows proved politically untenable. Now two Republican Presidential candidates, Elizabeth Dole and Senator John McCain, have come out in favor of some measures for gun control. So, too, have the two Republican Congressional leaders, Senator Trent Lott, the majority leader from Mississippi, and Speaker J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois.

I suspect McCain’s squishy 2nd Amendment support is a necessity in Arizona. Should he become the nation’s Democrat in the White House, he will become a gun control freak, IMO.

He’s also tried to stop gun shows...McCain is not a champion of gun rights as people on FR erroneously believe.

He voted to ban “cheap handguns” in 1999. What sheer idiocy.

“He voted to ban “cheap handguns” in 1999. What sheer idiocy.”

You must forfiet you 2nd Amendment Rights if you are not wealthy enough to spend $800.00 for the “proper” side arm.

Stupid thought...!

He supports Second Amendment rights ... for rich people. Poor people will just have to face life (or death) unarmed.

McCain is not a champion of gun rights as people on FR erroneously believe.

But, but, I'm sure that I've seen McCain Bots say that he "supports gun rights" in several threads.

They wouldn't be wrong, would they?

McCain is no friend of the Second Amendment at all.

See the Gun Owners of America on McCain's Record.

Next time you see those McCaniacs, challenge them to refute the Gun Owners of America report on McCain's anti-Second Amendment agenda. (http://www.gunowners.org/mccaintb.htm)

Be prepared for them to screech, bray, jump around and wave Hillary sock-puppets at you.

It's the liberal approach to all our rights. First they go after certain guns because they're "too cheap." Then they go after other guns because they're "too powerful." Then they go after another class of guns because they're "assault weapons."

What truly sickens me is that the RINO supporters see no problem with this and will deliberately lie about McCain's record in a vain attempt to gather support for that liberal with an 'R' by his name.

Republicans will reap what they sow. Went for the least conservative of the candidates.

dole, mcain, lott mentioned in the same ny slimes anti-gun article...

The USUAL (LIBERAL) suspects when it comes to NOT standing up for CORE CONSERVATIVE rights, principles, tradition, etc.

Ever notice the left-wing, or left-leaning political talk shows always seem to bring on the most ballsy, in-your-face, fire-eating liberal demonrats on their shows - for any given policy/subject, and then they bring on the opposition that can BARELY be termed "Republican" (disloyal turds all), and is more often than not, the weakest, most accomodating ("My good friend... blah blah blah"), compromising,mush-mouthed POS representative imaginable?

Someone like Jumpin' jim jeffords (before he jumped), mccain (who almost jumped), snowe, grahamnesty, dole and ford (the LOSER parade), susan collins, pataki, spector, shays, castle, leach, hagle, ahnold (the RINO-nater), voinovich, dewine, boehlert, etc.

It's sickening, disgusting, and maddening at the same time.

He managed, nonetheless, to score the endorsement of the NRA for this election:
