The First Ache

Twenty-five years ago, when Kanwaljeet Anand was a medical resident in a neonatal intensive care unit, his tiny patients, many of them preterm infants, were often wheeled out of the ward and into an operating room. He soon learned what to expect on their return. The babies came back in terrible shape: their skin was gray, their

“What’s going on in there to make these babies so stressed?” Anand wondered. Breaking with hospital practice, he wrangled permission to follow his patients into the O.R. “That’s when I discovered that the babies were not getting anesthesia,” he recalled recently. Infants undergoing major surgery were receiving only a paralytic to keep them still.

And it matters, of course, for the practice of abortion. Over the past four years, anti-abortion groups have turned fetal pain into a new front in their battle to restrict or ban abortion. Anti-abortion politicians have drafted laws requiring doctors to tell patients seeking abortions that a fetus can feel pain and to offer the fetus anesthesia; such legislation has already passed in five states.

Very interesting read. New scientific research point more and more to the humanity of the unborn. Perhaps this turns some who still need to be turned.

It just breaks my heart thinking of all the babies that have died in pain during abortions.

"Perhaps this turns some who still need to be turned."

My hope too. Let's not count on it though.

“That’s when I discovered that the babies were not getting anesthesia,” he recalled recently. Infants undergoing major surgery were receiving only a paralytic to keep them still.”

~~~~~
I remember this vividly; when my then sister-in-law had her preterm infant at 24 weeks, I was shocked at the baby’s appearance after surgery. I asked the doctors if she had received anesthesia during her surgery, and the doctors told me the name of a choline-type agent (if I remember correctly). When I told them that this was not an anesthetic, then asked what ANESTHETIC was administered, they simply walked away.
The baby girl died after surgery, from renal failure. I often wondered if it was shock from the pain of surgery without anesthetic. When I related my anger to my mother about this atrocity, she begged me to never tell the mother that her child probably suffered horrible pain because of the idiocy of doctors who operated on her bowels without anesthetics...
I agreed, only because I believe that the only pain worse than a baby’s pain during major surgery would be her mother’s pain at knowing her child suffered so during her brief life.
“all the babies that have died in pain during abortions”
They are in no pain now. And, at least, while their horrible pain was temporary, the pain of the mother and the other murderers will be everlasting.
What a depressing story! That poor baby! I’m not sure how you managed to stay so calm. Your mother was right though. No sense adding to the mom’s pain. Thank you for sharing this with us!
I can't agree that we should "hope" that the perpetrators of abortion go to hell.
Remember that our Father "desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." He "is forbearing toward you, not wishing that any should perish." His commandment is "that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another." This commandment summarizes all the others and expresses his entire will.
So if we hope, let us hope that those responsible for the murder of babies should repent and "come to a knowledge of the truth," bring God the acceptable offering of their broken hearts, ask for mercy, and receive it.
I never said I “hope.” And it is certainly not for me to judge. I can only reiterate what the Bible says —not to murder—and what may await those who do.
You are absolutely correct. Poor choice of words on my part. I guess when I feel in my heart that I hope they get what’s coming to them, it is the unrepentant person I am referring to. Of course I hope that all those people find the right path. I am a terrible sinner and find myself asking for forgiveness daily. I would expect no less for others. Forgive my quick response? :o)
I sure know what you mean.
In fact, this article, though deeply disturbing in many ways, is probably a very good sign. It’s an indication that people’s consciences are getting more and more uneasy about abortion. This Dr. Anand sounds like he’s well on his way to becoming and out-and-out prolifer, and the author Annie Murphy Paul evidently thinks it’s important that everyone -— all the readers of the NY Times Magazine -— should think about the implications related to abortion.
It’s wincingly ugly, but thank God the light is shining even here.
Let’s pray for each other, and for all the people who have cooperated with the evil of abortion.
It *is* interesting, and surprising that you found
bc of this one article, though! Thanks for bringing it
to our attention.
