Sen. Barack Obama promised to cut greenhouse gases during a pair of speeches today in College Park, Maryland, and Baltimore.
Obama, a Democrat seeking his party's nomination in tomorrow's (2/11/08) Maryland primaries, didn't tiptoe around the issue of climate change. Three times during a speech before about 20,000 enthusiastic supporters at the University of Maryland's Comcast basketball arena, he insisted the time has come for action. "We cannot wait to stop global warming," Obama said. "We cannot wait to fix this country."
He pledged to put mandatory caps on carbon dioxide emissions from industry. And he talked about it often enough to imply it was one of his top priorities, along with getting the U.S. out of Iraq by the end of 2009, extending health insurance to all Americans, preventing insurance companies from denying coverage because of pre-existing medical conditions, raising fuel efficiency standards for all vehicles to 40 m.p.g., fixing up crumbling schools and improving America's standing in the world by using more diplomacy to deal with our enemies.
(Footnote: my favorite line during his College Park speech was when he said his enemies were trying to smear him as a "hopemonger." That's funny. He's unlike Cheney and Bush, who are -- in Obama's view -- fearmongers. I guess if you're going to mong something, you might as well mong something with good P.R., like hope. "Warmonger" doesn't sound good. I guess he could try "joymonger" or "lovemonger" or "raisetheminimumwagemonger," but these might not make him sound like a serious candidate.)
During an even rowdier rally with 10,000 supporters at the First Mariner Arena in downtown Baltimore today, Obama said he favors "an environmental protection agency that believes in environmental protection." (Perhaps that's an obvious point, but it was a jab at Bush,

Didn't know that Pet Rock's had a built in Y2K clock in 'em, although I shouldn't talk .... my late Mom brought back a slab of "Genuine Grand Canyon Rock" for me when she visited there some 15 years ago ... with a label which said dated "18 Million Years Old" ... and *it* didn't all of a sudden disintegrate and start radiating really nasty neutrons and stuff when the clock struck midnight Dec 31 1999 .... /grin
Attack....defeat.....there’s a difference. He doesn’t know it.
Good we can launch him at the Sun.
The coming of the Messiah.
One example might be requiring the equivalent of environmental studies prior to the enforcement of any cap. Providing regulations that allow businesses to sue for the lifting of caps should CO2 be shown not to be the cause of global warming, etc.
The assumption being that at some point in time, a global warming abomination will get passed. When that happens, tying the enforcement and regulation up in court cases will delay things long enough for the next cooling cycle (already begun) will be able to show to the public the farce that this nonsense has become.
Of course, the best answer is to never allow this crap to see the light of day, but with McCain being the GOP front runner ... well, lets just say I don't hold much hope.
Obama is appealing to the dumbed down masses of the last 30 years. His “rhetoric” hits home with the ignorant who have been trained in “feelings”....NOT THINKING!
Attacking global warming must be tops in his foreign affairs folder.
xjcsa pledges to attack global warmism...
This guy cannot deliver anything.
I know what you mean. I’m going to have another three inches of global warming to brush and scrape off my car in the morning if the weather guys are right.
Can't he fix the biggest global polluters first? Didn't think so.
AMEN!!
and guess waht, its the COLDEST YEAR OF THE DECADE...
That Senator sure works fast.
To my ears, he can’t even deliver a decent speech. He sucks.
No News Wars!
War Poverty
War on Drugs
War in the middle class . . . this is the only one the dems are close to winning.
America does not need to be fixed — unless by that he means dismantling 9/10ths of the Federal government.
“Good to know that if McCain does lose, at least we have someone who will advance his policies on global warming.”
Yes, isn’t it very sad that our guy is as stupid as their guy.
At least I won’t worry about losing the election this November.
Yup, and why don't you pass legislation to stop continental drift while yer at it...?
