Ed Rendell, Straight-Talker ('Some whites probably not ready to vote for an African-American...)

Via TPM Election Central, I see that Governor Ed Rendell is back to embarrassing a presidential candidate he ostensibly supports. Here's an account of how Rendell, a Hillary supporter, recently sized up Obama's chances in Pennsylviania:

Gov. Ed "Don't Call Me 'Fast Eddie' " Rendell met with the editorial board of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last week to talk about his latest budget. But before turning the meeting over to his number-crunchers, our voluble governor weighed in on the primary fight between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama and what the Illinois senator could expect from the good people of Pennsylvania at the polls:

"You've got conservative whites here, and I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate," he said bluntly. Our eyes only met briefly, perhaps because the governor wanted to spare the only black guy in the room from feeling self-conscious for backing an obvious loser. "I believe, looking at the returns in my election, that had Lynn Swann [2006 Republican gubernatorial candidate] been the identical candidate that he was -- well-spoken [note: Mr. Rendell did not call the brother "articulate"], charismatic, good-looking -- but white instead of black, instead of winning by 22 points, I would have won by 17 or so."

Further down, another gem: "Indeed, Rendell's tenure as DNC chairman has been one long, off-the-cuff rant. The media love it (Chris Matthews of "Hardball" calls Rendell "a real mensch")."

I couldn't get any further than that.

Same thing happened to M Steele in 06, and Swann and Santorum both got their clocks cleaned in PA in 06, “but” that Zogby pre election poll hangs around the election like a dead sea gull:

30% will not vote for the Black Guy.
43% will not vote for a female CINC
28% would not vote for a Mormon.

It’s sad but true, I bet McCain does will in PA though.

I would happily vote for a black man for president if that man was Thomas Sowell.

The left will play this up big time.

If they can get just a few “guilt” votes in key places, it will help.

Rendell’s wording is almost EXACTLY what I expected.
My expected wording was “There are some voters that still hold just enough racist views that they won’t vote for Obama. [subtext: you wouldn’t want to be one of those, would you?]”

Dr. Thomas Sowell is 10 shades darker than Borat Hussein and I would vote for him in a heartbeat. Rendell is a racist POS.

Yeah, I wouldn’t have any problem voting for a black person or a woman - but not THAT black person and not THAT woman.

I’d wholeheartedly campaign for and vote for Condi.

Sorry, that would have made the title too long (>100 characters) for the FR posting format...so here it is in graphic form instead.

Barf

Boolshat! I’m a genetically mixed up junkyard dog, don’t play the damned race card with me! I don’t care where your folks came from, it is no excuse to be a Dumbass!
Last damned thing any of my ancestors want from me is to let myself end up a sniveling little crybaby.

I’d vote for a woman, but Margaret Thatcher isn’t a US citizen.
