EAST OF SAN ISIDRO -- A man died early this morning when a truck full of illegal immigrants fled U.S. Border Patrol agents and crashed into the brush.
Authorities believe the car was carrying at least 16 passengers and trying to find a way around the Falfurrias checkpoint, when the driver allegedly panicked at the site of Border Patrol agents.
Although agents were not pursuing the truck, it drove off the road and crashed just after 4 a.m. near the intersection of Farm-to-Market roads 1017 and 681 in the tiny community of Puerto Rico, about 10 miles east of San Isidro, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño said.
The driver and several other passengers fled the wreckage and disappeared into the brush. One man, who had sustained severe head injuries, was found dead at the scene, the sheriff said.
Authorities arrested four of the suspected immigrants nearby -- including a 13-year-old boy.
Federal, state and local authorities combed the scene for hours after the wreck and remained on the scene just before noon.
Although Department of Public Safety Troopers first responded to the crash, they did not call Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies, who have taken over the case, until just after 6 a.m., the sheriff said.
Investigators have determined that the wrecked truck was reported stolen from a Weslaco Wal-Mart late Tuesday night.
The sheriff said that the driver of the vehicle could be charged with homicide for his passenger's death.
In a previous version of this story, investigators said that the dead man had been decapitated in the wreck. They have since retracted that statement.
Hidalgo Co. is where Chertoff made the deal not to build the wall last week. It sounds as though our crack Homeland Security crew has the situation well in hand there.

A 18’ sheer face on a levee is not a “wall?”
What is the over/under on the prison terms to be given to the Border Patrol Agents for this trajedy after they are indicted by Johnny Sutton?
Since they were not actually chasing the illegals, I’ll say they get no more than 7 years in the federal pen.
If this was written by the liberal press the lead line would be “Man in Texas killed by Bush!”
The Mexicans have lost more people on the border while invading the USA than we have lost invading Iraq.
Why Haven’t the Mexican Government called for a total withdrawal?
Just wondering...
Well they were at the site.
Maybe they just didn’t see them.
The illegals are panicking all the time.
Ask Hillary!
Then again, John McCain and our president (I hate to ever gripe about President Bush because I am a huge supporter of his) feel that they should be here breaking the law. I take that back, they both feel that their crimes should be washed away, and that they should be rewarded for breaking the law.
“One man, who had sustained severe head injuries . . . “
will be enrolling in law school this fall. ~Aye aye aye~!
“panicked at the site of Border Patrol agents.”
“Your spell checker works, now check your brain, Mr. Editor.”
Hay! I sough that two!
Depends. Did they tamper with evidence and lie about it to investigators like Ramos and Compean?
We need to furnish illegals with new vans and pickups, as they cross the border to save our economy.
Maybe they could be charged with Use of Federal Vehicle in Commission of a Crime...
