I didn't have a problem with Bob Dole.

Nor did I. Dole wasn't as conservative as I would have wanted but he was every bit as conservative as Fred Thompson who was supposedly the conservative savior this year. I still wish Dole had gotten the nomination in 1988 rather than George H. W. Bush.

Bob Dole is given a lot of grief for running a bad campaign but unfortunately for Republicans, Bill Clinton wasn't going to be beaten in 1996, no matter who was the Republican candidate.

I see a repeat of ‘96 where it actually doesn’t matter who the final GOP Presidential candidate is in ‘08. I see the Democrats winning BIG at every political level on November 4 and the U.S. truly becoming a third world “hellhole” for the long-term because of all of their political power on the left. How are conservatives truly supposed to succeed in stopping this momentum on both the Democratic and leftist side prior to November 4?

You are right. In fact I think Dole was more conservative than savior Thompson. Thompson did vote for Campaign Financie Reform and was otherwise very chummy with the same crowd McCain pals with. If Thompson had been there, it likely would have been a gang of 15 dealing in the confirmation process. Somehow he got billed as something he never was. It is funny how myth becomes reality in these races. I saw Thompson as McCain wtihout the temper. He endorsed McCain in 2000 and now again in 2008. Even over at votesmart, Thompson was labeled a moderate if you looked him up as Senator, but he got billed a conservative as a presidential candidate. Same guy. Same website. Different result. So it is easy to see why voters get confused.

Somewhere along the line the strategists have convinced enough people that a true conservative can't win. This is a mess we have created ourselves by believing the wrong people and voting strategy rather than conscience. Sure by the time we actually have a nominee you have to look at who the race is between. But what everyone does is give up on a true conservative before the race even starts. How many people endorsed Guiliani because he could beat Hillary? Not only was Guiliani never a contender, but Hillary may not be the Democrat nominee. The strategists know nothing but what THEY personally want. We should fight for a conservative from the very start all the way up until someone has 1,191 votes. If we face a brokered convention then fine. Whoever wins it is the nominee. Fight until you cannot fight and THEN weigh the situation between the Republican and Democrat nominee.
