that is only one part of McCain’s argument—one for which there is a lot of evidence. You should read the whole pdf of the statement. Most important of which is, “winning the hearts and minds” by maintaining the “moral high ground” in the eyes of the international community.

Do any of these laws really matter once you have the terrorist in the interrogation room? Can’t they just “Jack Bauer” it and tell the terrorist, “I don’t care WHAT LAWS they pass. Here’s how I DO IT HERE”? Then either fake them out or even “break” the law?
Are we really going to be letting terrorists run free to sue us, and prosecuting the military police? (Oh... Wait a minute... Ramos and Campien...)

...“winning the hearts and minds” by maintaining the “moral high ground” in the eyes of the international community...this was essentially the basis of the old Torricelli standard which sought to prohibit us from gaining intelligence by contact with "undesirables" - underworld and other outlaw types who are in fact probably the best sources of the kind of info we need to have - and which probably inhibited our ability to gather intelligence to the extent that it may have left us vulnerable to attacks such as 911 - Boy Scouts are not likely to be involved in schemes such as those which result in ariplanes being flown into buildings......
