Civil Rights Icon John Lewis Switches Super-Delegate Vote From Hillary To Obama
TPM ^ | 02.14.08

This is big news, and may well be the beginning of the end for Hillary Clinton's super-delegate strategy. The New York Times reports that Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), a legend of the civil rights movement who had endorsed Hillary last year, is switching his super-delegate vote from her over to Barack Obama.

It figures.

Lewis has a higher loyalty than to the Democratic Party.

Serves the Democratic Party right. Live by the race card, die by the race card.

The man was my representative for way too many years. He didn't even answer the letters or return the telephone calls of his white constituents . . . can't be bothered. Even though I was a campaign contributor (Julian Bond was running against him, and there are some things that are worse even than John Lewis.)

Darn, I hope the “party of sleaze” is not having a fit of conscience! I was looking forward to the fireworks and watching the dims eat their own! I even stocked up on popcorn.

Poetic justice.

How right you probably are.

"While it would be unseemly for the candidates to hand out thousands of dollars to primary voters, or to the delegates pledged to represent the will of those voters, elected officials serving as superdelegates have received about $890,000 from Obama and Clinton in the form of campaign contributions over the last three years," the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics reported today.

If these defections continue at their present pace, space in Fort Marcy Park will soon become back-ordered.

I think Obama will be harder to beat though.

Any criticism will be met with the little kid shouting, "THAS RACISS!"

Very true. But in the end, McCain will mop the floor with Obama.

And the House of Clinton will have fallen.

Well, as they say, "Friends come and go, but enemies accumulate."

The Clintons have accumulated many, many enemies during their reign of terror. So long as she was the anointed frontrunner, nobody would speak against her because they feared the possible consequences, whether an IRS investigation or Fort Marcy Park. But once people feel it's safe, they'll desert in droves.

We'll have to wait and see if this is a temporary crack in the dam that she can still patch up with money and threats, or if it's passed the point of no return.

What do you expect, Obama has shelled out about $900K to super delegates while the Clinton’s have only put out Chelsea and $200K.

I think Hillary will be harder to beat. If she manages, by hook or by crook, to get the nomination, she will, by hook or by crook, win the election. For one thing, she and Bill had complete access to all classifeid information for eight years, so expect the mother of all October surprises if she’s the nominee. She wants it so badly she’ll destroy McCain if she has to, and she has the opposition research to do it. Second, if Obama is the nominee, expect Clinton, Inc. to be quietly working behind the scenes to hand the election to McCain. That way she could run again in four years, instead of having to wait eight, when she will be too old.

“Live by the race card, die by the race card.”

Didn’t the article say that Lewis would be hard pressed to vote against the expressed will of his constituents? His district went overwhelmingly for Obama. That’s why he’s switching. Ditto for others in the Cong. Black Caucus who’s districts went for Obama. These guys have to answer to their constituents. I just don’t think it’s about race here. I assure you, if Hillary carried his district, Lewis would still be supporting her.

Nope, the whole purpose of the Super Delegates was to protect against a runaway candidate not approved by the party bosses. Thwarting the "will of the constituents" was exactly what this was intended to do.

But in the 5th, this has presented a radioactive issue this time (black vs. white). So Lewis is dumping the party in favor of Obama.

It is exactly poetic justice, because the party has stoked the fires of racial enmity for its own benefit for YEARS.

Julian Bond is still backing Hillary Clinton, though, I believe.

A friend of mine has a copy of an issue of Sepia from the early 70s with an article entitled: "Julian Bond: America's First Black President?" or something to that effect.

I dunno. Run an angry, old coot liberal against a younger, charismatic liberal and it'll be like Nixon vs. Kennedy in 1960. Hell, McCain already looks as pasty white as something that crawled out from under a rotting log. Putting him next to the permanently-tanned Obama and people will do little but remark about how McCain looks like he's got one foot in the grave.
