Black Superdelegates Shift to Obama - John Lewis Switches From Clinton to Obama
ABC ^ | Feb 15, 2008 | JAKE TAPPER

Posted on 02/15/2008 6:04:45 AM PST by RDTF

Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., may have an added obstacle in her pursuit of the support of superdelegates — the party insiders and elected officials who compose roughly 20 percent of the total Democratic delegates, and who may ultimately choose the nominee.

One prominent superdelegate who is also the highest-ranking black in Congress told ABC News that the racially tinged way in which critics say the Clintons conducted their campaign in South Carolina is driving black superdelegates into the arms of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill..

"The surge — if I may use that word — occurred in direct correlation to the way that campaign had been ratcheted up," said Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., the House Majority Whip who has not endorsed a candidate. "Those of us who live in the South especially, we know the code words when we hear them and we understand the tone. People felt some of that was going on and they reacted to it in a very bitter way."

Clyburn made his remarks as his colleague, Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., switched from supporting Clinton to announcing that as a superdelegate he will vote for Obama.

"In recent days, there is a sense of movement and a sense of spirit," Lewis told The New York Times. "Something is happening in America and people are prepared and ready to make that great leap."

Lewis also said he was influenced by the fact that his home state voted heavily for Obama. Clyburn told ABC News that he had heard from many black lawmakers who thought the Clintons played the race card. Clyburn said of particular offense was former President Clinton's comparison of Obama with the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

"This country has had it. Blacks voting for a man just because he is black. Women voting for a woman just because she’s a woman. Nothing to do with their qualifications. Our people are becoming so shallow it amazes me."

Refreshing...people admitting that they're racists and sexists. I've always known that it's normal and wide-spread.

I wonder if the Dems will decide not to televise their convention so that the country won’t see Blacks sitting on one side and white women sitting on the other?

Many are voting for Obama to keep the Clintoons out, period.
They will come back and vote for McCain in the General election. Especially the Blue dogs, and moderates, who know-what it means elect the Oprah Show, or Comrade Clinton!

If that is the case, you can bet they are going to SCREAM the election was a scam because ALLLL these people voted for Obama so if he doesn’t win it must have been STOLEN.

By the way, Boston is ticked off at Huckabee for using their song “More than a feeling” and said they wouldn’t ever endorse a candidate that is polar opposite of their beliefs, they are supporting Obama.

Boston sucks.

Good going Hill & Bill!
Youze guys are political geniuses.

First you ticked off the blacks so now Obama gets them. Then to out do yourselves, you fire your top (token) Hispanic so now Obama will get a good portion of them too.

What's next... Hill stating she's absolutely, 100%, heterosexual? /s

How do they explain the big Hillary win in Ohio and Pennsylvania? We always hear about the fact that Pa politics are dominated by Phila and Pittsburgh.

“So, who are the bigger racists - those who don’t vote for Obama because of his race, or those that do?”

Many Romney supporters on FreeRepublic kept telling me that voting FOR Romney because he was a fellow Mormon was not discrimination, so I guess, by that standard, the blacks who are voting FOR Obama because he is part black are not racist.

It's too early to be high. They haven't voted in OH or PA. What big win?

They were predicting a big win for Hillary on the news and I thought that they were talking about real time. My mistake, I tend to tune out any news about the Democrats.

It really isn’t racism. Lewis is dumping party bossism that would hand the nomination to someone who didn’t receive a majority of the delegates thru the primary process. Superdelegates will switch rather than steal the election from the people’s choice. The Dem party does not want to commit political suicide. Expect more such defections to occur

“I will repeat for the 10th time today. To vote for someone because he/she is black is just as bad as not voting for someone because he is black.”

Keep saying it because it is so very true.
