The Problem is not America nor the Bush Administration

"We want to be able to love America again,"
German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, in an editorial for Die Zeit newspaper.

Arizona Senator and U.S. presidential hopeful John McCain gave an interview with Der Spiegel.

Although Hugh Hewitt found something in it to be encouraged by a McCain presidency, Laura Ingraham (who has a serious case of McCDS and conservative elitism) pointed out the other day the same fault that I see in the interview: the unwillingness on the part of John McCain, the straight shooter, to repudiate or challenge the premise of the questions. I found them rather flawed and insulting. I boldened the parts in this excerpt that really made me squirm:

SPIEGEL: Senator McCain, Europe is reserving a lot of hope for the next president of the United States. Will you try to win back trust in America around the world?

McCain: I know most of the leaders in Europe and other parts of the world and I have a long record of my positions and my ability to work together with our allies. I think I will start out with a level of credibility.

SPIEGEL: America has lost a lot of friends because President George W. Bush angered, indeed outraged, them. He allowed human rights to be violated at Guantanamo Bay, and he dismissed the joint effort to combat global warming. Under a President McCain, could we expect a change of course?

McCain: Yes. I would announce that we are not ever going to torture anyone held in American custody. I would announce that we were closing Guantanamo Bay and moving those prisoners to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and I would announce a commitment to addressing climate change and my dedication to a global agreement -- but it has to include India and China.

SPIEGEL: So is America coming back to renegotiate the Kyoto Protocol?

The nerve of any German to say such a thing!

Well, I guess I won’t vote for president this year. John McCain sounds just like his friends John Kerry, John Edwards, Barack Hussein Obama, Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy. A pox on all of them!

Another inspiring statement by our staunch allies in the war on terror. Makes me want to rush out and buy a BMW.

I had wondered about McCain’s temperament because of the stories about him losing his temper and such. It’s good to see that he puts all those issues to rest in this interview. He’s not “McNasty” after all...and he knows himself better than anyone else does.

Hmmm. This is a brilliant move! Say that you are going to do everything you can about climate change, but insist that Indai and China go along too, knowing that those countries would never go along with such a thing.

I “want to be able” to know that Germany has finally figured out how utterly indifferent are most Americans to German opinion.

“Herr Kohl, a lot of us would like to be able to love Germany again.”

Somebody once said that the Germans are a remarkable people, if you don’t count world wars.

Disappointing. Helmut Kohl used to be pro-U.S. when pro-U.S. really wasn’t cool (1982 Soviet peace offensive, etc.)

Churchill said something like this: ‘The Germans are either at your feet or at your back.’

Threads like this are a great opportunity to toss the grenade back to the Deutschlanders. Just mention a former Chancellor or Head of State there and they pick it up off the net and analyze it to see if anybody here is a real threat or danger to the leadership elite there.

Obviously we are not much of a threat.

Wish it were otherwise, but we hardly know those people and they are so far away from us.

"We want to be able to love America again,"

And do we owe Germany that somehow? Is it America's job to be lovable?

The Germans won't love us until we're as guilt-ridden and insecure as they are. A liberal president will give them that in spades of course, which is why they pray for a Democrat or a weak Republican.

Actually, Churchill may have been paraphrasing when he referred to the Germans as being subservient or truculent: “either they are at your feet or at your throat.” Could apply to other groups; Muslims for instance.

But it was Sir Winston who said after V-E Day,

“My hatred died with their surrender.”
