The Democrats' supersized headache
Toronto Star ^ | 2/16/2008 | Tim Harper

On this long road to the Democratic presidential nomination, a frightening sign has popped up alongside the highway.

Warning. Potential Car Wreck Ahead.

There are two ways this riveting race for the prize between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton could careen into the ditch and both are giving party officials the yips at night.

It may all come down to how hard the Clintons, their dynasty hanging by a thread, the traditional path to a convention win looking increasingly unlikely, will fight to wrest this nomination from Obama.

The balance of power today rests with the 796 so-called superdelegates, an elite group so far controlled by Clinton, and 366 phantom delegates from Michigan and Florida, the majority of whom the New York senator seeks to claim as her own.

Neither route to the nomination would appear likely without an ugly battle.

If Obama pulls ahead in the race, there is an expectation the superdelegates will begin to ditch Clinton and move to the perceived winner rather than risk thwarting the will of the voters.

This is, after all, a party still stinging from 2000, when their candidate won the popular vote but lost the election.

Clinton could be setting them up for failure again by asking them to stay with her.

In Michigan and Florida – stripped of their delegates for bucking party rules – Clinton won the popular vote easily, although no one campaigned in either state and Obama didn't even put his name on the Michigan ballot.

She has begun a push to have those delegates counted before the nomination race is over but she will have to parry accusations that she is seeking to change the rules in the middle of the game.

Will there be civil violence if Obama doesn’t get his way?

You are so right, cgbg. Obama is just the sort of candidate the superdelegates were created to prevent, but they will not have the backbone to serve as intended.
As for the Clintons, I would add that it isn’t just their incompetent campaign or the scales falling from people’s eyes. Nothing drives people away quite as effectively as menopause and a heart operation. The Clintons are, in a word, old. Your basic Democrat is an adolescent.

There will not be the level of protest in the streets of Denver, Colorado like there was in the streets of Chicago in 1968. I guess that gives the superdelegates the cover they need to "vote vagina".

Folks, it's REALLY important for this to happen. We've already lost 2008, no matter what, there will be a liberal taking the oath of office in January. But it's vital for black America to divorce itself from the Rat party, and having Hillary steal the nomination, then go on to win the White House that "should have been Barack's" is an essential part of this narrative.

They will toss a monkey wrench into anything she wants to do, and this will lead to the train wreck that gets conservatives back in the Congress in 2010, and then a true conservative nominee up to bat in 2012.

If you're hoping and pining for a McCainiac victory, then you might as well talk your congresscritters into passing that Schwartzenegger amendment, so we can have an even more liberal Pubbie nominee next time!

*** It's not that simple. ***

I know. But I was trying to keep it as simple as possible as to 'Super Delegate'.

It's that 'Super Delegate' tag the Dem use and have that is confusing. And it was only last week that Bob Beckle said on FNC he helped create the 'Super' Delegate. So I don't think that term is an MSM creation.

And in today's world what happened to Mayor Daley and the IL delegation in 72 would not occur. They'd (most) be 'Super Delegates'.

btw, I LIKED the old (real) Mayor Daley, he took no cr*p. He defended his cops after the (cough) '1968 Police Riot' AND gave a 'Shoot To Kill' order to the CPD during the 'King Riots' when the natives 'residents' were burning down the West Side, looting and 'snipers' were shooting at firemen and ambulances. After that order went out - publicly - the looting and 'sniping' ended pdq.

Only the Dems have these 'Super' Delegates, Republicans don't.

A FReeper pointed out yesterday that the pubbies have their own version of the super delegate. The are the uncommitted delegates. Per the FReeper, the Dims have about 27% super delegates and the pubbies have about 15% uncommitted delegates. I do remember Daley's walk and thinking at the time the Dims just threw out the guy that stole the 1960 election for Kennedy by voting his dead a few dozen times. I thought it was 68 but in retrospect I think you are correct it was 72. Regardless it was a great four years for the radicals in the Dim party. A lot can happen in twelve years when the commies run the schools.

The key seems to be is to get “Dee Obammah” and Hillary to destroy each other at the convention.Perhaps one of them could be encouraged to start a third “Bull Moose” party?

Giuliani paid about 60 Million clams for that one delegate.

I hope he used it wisely.......

And McCain took out a loan to survive. But then he admits that economics are confusing to him and he needs to learn more about the subject. (Probably after he hopes to get elected.)

Not enough for a riot. Denver just isn't the rioting type, at least in the last 60-80 years. If there's a riot, it will happen somewhere else.

Hillary has run the most inept primary campaign in the history of the country. Her authoritarian and arrogant style has assured her electoral humiliation.

And I must say that this is a sweet thing to see and restores my faith that karma DOES exist. As all the bozo’s she has screwed over and families of the murdered are overjoyed to see this person NOT SUCCEED!!!
