Clinton campaign defends superdelegates’s influence
The Hilll ^ | 2/16/07 | Jessica Holzer

A top strategist to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) on Saturday countered the recent claims of some prominent Democrats that party elders would be wrong to override the will of their constituents in their choice for the Democratic presidential nominee.

In a phone call with reporters, Harold M. Ickes, argued that the 796 so-called superdelegates who could decide the party’s White House nominee were as much or “potentially more in touch” with the issues important to voters than the delegates amassed by the candidates through state

He also suggested that Clinton would fight to the bitter end for the nomination, predicting that she would be “neck and neck” with Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) after Puerto Rico votes on July 7 and would rely on the support of the superdelegates to clinch the nomination “shortly after that.” The Democrats will hold their convention in late August.

It's the "voters be damned" primary. I'm sure that democrat voters will accept this without argument or resentment. They do have their betters after all.

Good. I hope it is long and bloody.

The best case scenario would be for Obama to get the most elected delegates and for Hillary to then get the democRat nomination through a back room deal with the party "leaders."

A different story some time back.....

"We are a very different country than we were 200 years ago," Clinton said. "I believe strongly that in a democracy, we should respect the will of the people and to me, that means it's time to do away with the Electoral College and move to the popular election of our president." "I hope no one is ever in doubt again about whether their vote counts."--Hillary Clinton--

Her adviser, Ickes, really was named correctly—a true liberal slimeball. But I hope the Clintonoids keep up on this because it will fracture the Dumbocrat party far worse than the selection of McVain will fracture the Republican party. I never thought I would see an election where the majorities in both parties despised their respective candidates.

If Obama wins the popular vote AND the majority of pledged delegates, the DNC will not (cannot) let Hillary take the nomination.

The DNC is panicked that not only will the Dem base not vote for her in the general election, but that she is so despised amongst the Republicans and many Independents that as she goes over the cliff into oblivion, so will the boatload of rats hanging onto her coattails. The Dems will lose the house and senate.

This is why Teddy, Kerry, Pelosi, etc. want Obama to win. So I am not so sure that Hillary will be able to win the superdelegate race either.

If Obama wins the popular vote AND the majority of pledged delegates, the DNC will not (cannot) let Hillary take the nomination.

The super delegates will dump Hillary if Obama has a substantial lead. If he has a slim lead then Hillary can still take the nomination.

The way they will rig it will be to seat the Florida and Michigan delegates. That way they can argue that Obama is trying to disenfranchise voters not them.

The super-delegates were the democrat’s answer to the debacle with George McGovern.

It makes sense...except that they are now the party of “the popular vote” and Hillary is one of the leading advocates of “the popular vote.”

Pure hypocrisy is all it is. It all depends on whose ox is being gored.

I don’t think the conservatives, republicans, and conservative leaning independents are going to buy into the “Obama - Golden Child” nonsense.

I think he’ll go down in flames.

Hillary’s right, but she has now come upon a bridge that she is responsible for burning.

I dont see how the DNC can seat the delegates from Florida and Michigan. If the DNC allowed Florida and Michigan to seat their delegates, it will set a horrible precedence for the DNC.

If those two state are allowed to break the rules and still be counted, then every Dem State Committee will pick and choose their own schedule for the next primary.

The only way I can see those two states counting is if they hold a special election for those states and both candidates are allowed to campaign there.

So why did Michigan and Florida have the primaries to begin with if delegates were excluded from the convention? Did they all (the national and the state parties) plan this absurd scene from the start?

I get kinda sick of hearing this phrase. It's as if Clinton is some kind of supernatural being, capable of literally any miracle. She's merely mortal.

I'm also tired about hearing about how the Clintons are supposedly so hard to beat in an election. Let's consider who they ran against...

In 1992, they ran against a weak and ineffective Bush Sr., who basically got fired by the Republicans for going back on his "no new taxes" pledge. Even so, they probably wouldn't even have won the general if not for Ross Perot getting 19% of the vote (most of it coming from Bush).

In 1996, they got to run against the probably the weakest candidate the GOP ever put up in a general election - Bob Dole.

In the 2000 senate race, they got to run against pretty much nobody (Rick Lazio...are you kidding?).

Ditto for 2006.

Barack Obama, he of two years experience in the senate and not much else, is not much of a candidate but he's not the pushover the previous Clinton opponents were. And Obama is kicking their butts from Maine to Oregon and most places in between.

Why not? The Democrats are experts in changing the rules after the game has already started. Remember Lautenberg replacing the Torch on the NJ ballot after the deadline had already passed? Remember the Palm Beach election board changing the qualifications for legitimate ballot votes in the middle of the count?
