How Far Will Paperless Trail Carry Obama?

By CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER

February 15, 2008

There's no better path to success than getting people to buy a free commodity.

Like the genius who figured out how to get people to pay for water: Bottle it (Aquafina was revealed to be nothing more than reprocessed tap water) and charge more than they pay for gasoline.

Or consider how Google found a way to sell dictionary nouns — boat, shoe, clock — by charging advertisers zillions to be listed whenever the word is searched.

And now, in the most amazing trick of all, a silver-tongued freshman senator has found a way to sell hope. To get it, you need only give him your vote. Barack Obama is getting millions.

This kind of sale is hardly new. Organized religion has been offering a similar commodity — salvation — for millennia. Which is why the Obama campaign has the feel of a religious revival with, as writer James Wolcott observed, a "salvational fervor" and "idealistic zeal divorced from any particular policy or cause and chariot-driven by pure euphoria."

"We are the hope of the future," sayeth Obama. We can "remake this world as it should be." Believe in me and I shall redeem not just you but your country — nay, we can become "a hymn that will heal this nation, repair this world, and make this time different than all the rest."

And believe they do....

And if ye believe in Obama, he shall lower thy golf score and, verily, he shall raise thy bowling score. Thee only needeth hope in change.

It apparently no longer matters to many if a candidate is without substance, in fact a blank candidate can be seen as a mirror reflecting the hopes of the voter.

Obama will be the political equivalent of a Coyote Date.

I've seen only one similar national swoon.

On a local level, I've seen it rather recently. In 2005. Right here in San Antonio. Only the match up didn't work out for the young whipper snapper.

Born in 1974, Julian Castro is truly a handsome, bright young man with some kind of future of him. He and his twin brother, Joaquín, are graduates of Standford and Harvard Law School. Joaquin staked out a seat in the Texas House of Representatives. Julian won a seat on the San Antonio city council from 2001 to 2005.

When term limits put an end to his service on the council, he decided to take a shot at the mayor's vacant office. Cute, personable, bright, and with really great press behind him, he thought he might have more than a shot.

Then, 31 year old Julian ran up against 71 year old Phil Hardberger and the old geezer taught the young pup a few things about politics. Substance counts.

Hardberger had never held office in San Antonio. When Hardberger decided to run, he was off in retirement sailing about the seas and lakes with his wife. Guess that wasn't exciting enough.

Hardberger's biography is, even if the guy is a Democrat, dazzling. Air Force pilot. Journalist. Business Man. Successful attorney. Judge. Texas Supreme Court Justice. Poor Julian, also a Democrat, didn't stand a chance. In 2007, Hardberger was reelected and is widely regarded as our most popular and effective mayor within anybody's memory.

So, what might our local experience portend for the Cult of Obama? The electorate might pine for a messiah, but when you get down to the cutting, they tend to look for a guy with some history behind him.

Lord, I must be getting old. I have no clue what a Coyote Date is.

Although I do remember coming home with a 10 and waking up with a 2.

Is it sorta the same?

Yep, pretty close.

A coyote will chew off its arm to get out of a trap.

A coyote date is where you wake up the next morning and her heads on your arm and you’d rather chew off your arm than wake her up.

Cf: Coyote Arm..

;)

There was a young guy who got elected to the Australian Senate in the 60’s...completely out of his depth...cried during his “maiden” speech and was general laughing stock.

If Obama didn't leave a paper trail, it was because he only used one square.

I wish chuck would get off the bottled water analogy. It is a 1st rate home grown business. It employees tens of thousand Americans and produces a highly regulated product that is in great demand.

And guess what it is not from China!!!
Municipal water systems are highly unionized, big surprise the hate America crowd has focused on one of Americas purest and most popular products!

Global Warming my ass oh I forgot its “climate change” up or down US business is the loser.
