Young Russia protests against independent Kosovo near Serbian embassy

MOSCOW. Feb 18 (Interfax) - About 50 members of the Young Russia movement protested against the unilateral recognition of independent Kosovo near the Serbian embassy in Moscow on Sunday.

The action started with a three-minute film about Kosovo. Then a girl in a black wig, black paint on her face and a sign reading Condoleezza Rice on her chest and back sawed chains off a 'Pandora's box' and let out a young man dressed as death. Ten people wearing military uniforms and American flags on their chests surrounded the duo.

The 'death' stabbed Serbia on the globe with scythe and 'blood' spilled out.

"We have come here as citizens to express our opinion. We are against Kosovo's separation from Serbia. The action of European politicians [the recognition of Kosovo] opens Pandora's box. Now we will witness a series of independence declarations in many countries," Young Russia leader Maxim Mishchenko said.

"We have come here to show this performance and say what would happen to the world if Kosovo becomes independent," he told Interfax.

The movement's press secretary Lilia Bakhromova said that the action was authorized.

Reinforced police patrols were guarding the area. No violent incidents took place.

ARTICE SNIPPET: “Maksim Mischenko, leader of the “Young Russia” movement, is assuming authority to combat the Other Russia. This he announced this on October 3rd, during an appearance at a rally in Moscow of the pro-Kremlin movement, “Everything is Going as Planned!””

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Kremlin youth movements have harassed and intimidated opposition activists in the past under the open protection of the government. Nashi (read more here, and here) in particular, has used violence against many opposition protest marches and movements.”

Why is “Young Russia” so exercised about breakaway Kosovo? It’s not even near Russian territory.

Unless.... they regard Serbia as part of Greater Russia, and losing Kosovo (if it happens) is to them like losing all the former S.S.R.’s after 1991.

IIRC, this group is still seething at the Baltic states for their upstart declarations of independence.

(sigh) Russians just want their empire back.

“Russians just want their empire back.”

Yep, that about sums it up in my opinion.

Basically of the same reason for which some Americans are exercised about Kosovo. Kosovo is even further from the US's borders, than from the Russian ones, go figure...

The Russians are allied with the Serbs, plus they have a breakaway republic problem of their own with Chechnya. Oddly enough, though, the Russians are backing a couple of breakaway states in Georgia.

Breakaway Fever -- catch it!

Serbs are ethnically Slavic like Russians.

IIRC, Serbs are also part of the Russian Orthodox Church, they write in cyrillic where Croats and Slovenes write the same language in the Latin alphabet, and are generally more Eastern-oriented.

But Kosovo is ethnically Albanian and therefore Muslim. There is already talk of it becoming the latest `terrorist launching pad’. Reason enough for international concern, but I still don’t understand the Russian connection.

The Russians also support a breakaway region in the Republic of Moldova (Transnistria) and a breakaway region in Azerbaijan (Nagorno-Karrabach).

Yet now they're consumed with promoting the territorial integrity of Serbia. Putin... maybe just slightly a hypocrite?

There is already "talk?" By whom?

Kosovo has been de facto independent for eight years. Where are the Al Qaeda training camps? Albania has existed next door for ever, and it's a predominately Muslim country too. Are you suggesting Albania is a major "terrorist launching pad?"

This is sillines.

You’re right. The `terrorism talk’ is mostly Serbian and Russian objections to Kosovo independence.

Is Russia bombing Kosovo yet, or have they still not identified a target worth bombing?

“Are you suggesting Albania is a major “terrorist launching pad?”

Albania's specialty is organized crime and white slavery.

There's organized crime and "white slavery" in plenty of other places. I wouldn't call Moldova, Macao or Montenegro terrorist hotspots either.

Yep, and much of it is run by Albanians. They spread crime and corruption where ever they go.

See, you associate all Albanians with "crime and corruption." I associate Albanians with brilliant comic timing:
