U.S. Rep. District 14 recommendation for Peden (TX)
Victoria Advocate ^

Chris Peden of Friendswood is challenging incumbent Congressman Ron Paul in the Republican primary. Since there is no Democratic contest, the primary winner will be the 14th District’s next representative in Congress.

Peden, a 43-year-old certified public accountant who is the founding partner of Peden & Associates, L.L.P., offers the Republicans an excellent choice.

Smaller government, lower taxes, strong national defense and traditional family values have defined the Republican Party, and Peden says he is the candidate who better reflects his party’s ideals.

He is currently serving as mayor pro-tem in Friendswood, a city of 34,000 in the shadow of Houston’s metroplex, and speaks proudly of having led a successful movement to refund a million dollars in property taxes to hometown taxpayers while still keeping a balanced budget.

On a national level, he supports major reform of our tax code to the point of eliminating the income tax and replacing it with a consumption tax as in the Fair Tax Plan. While we may have doubts about that particular plan, we believe he is certainly someone who would bring the knowledge and skill to offer convincing arguments for needed change.

The 14th Congressional District contains the longest stretch of Gulf coast in the state. Peden realizes that it’s imperative to have a good working relationship with the Corps of Engineers. “They’ll have a reserved parking space for me, I’ll be there so much,” he quipped to the Advocate’s editorial board recently, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining the integrity of the commercially important Intracoastal Waterway.

With the federal deficit charging upward to $400 billion from $163 billion last year, it will be important to have someone not only with fiscal discipline and an aptitude for numbers but someone who can work with his colleagues in getting results, just as he did on Friendswood City Council.

Congressman Paul, who in 1988 was the Libertarian Party’s candidate for president, has been the Republican representative from the 14th District since 1997, but his voting record for Republican causes should raise questions. As compiled by the Washington Post, Paul’s voting record in the current Congress indicates that he has agreed with the majority of his party only 74.8 percent of the time, the lowest of any Republican representative.

In spite of Paul’s high rating on constituent services, many, including us, question how effective Paul has been in representing the interests of this region.

Chris Peden offers the Republicans a fresh voice aligned better with party principles and those of the 14th District. We recommend him.
