Presidents' Day Served With Pie And Protest at Nixon Library

YORBA LINDA – The first Amendment was alive and well today, Presidents' Day, as demonstrators for and against the war in Iraq displayed signs along Yorba Linda Boulevard, in front of the Nixon Presidential Library & Museum.

The larger group, a dozen strong, set up on a corner waiving signs criticizing the war and handing out slices of "Bring Them Home-made Pie" to passersby.

A man driving a yellow Hummer honked at the group and gave it a thumbs up. They responded in kind.

One of the demonstrators, Pat Alviso, waved a sign with a picture of her son.

"He is career Marine Corps," she said.

Though he is now stationed in Oahu, "He knows – we both know – he is going to go back. Some of these guys are on their fifth tour. It's a crime. We have to be out here.''

Across the street, a man stood alone most of the morning, holding a sign that said, "Support Our Troops.''

“I want to provide support for our troops and challenge the anti-American people across the street,” said Tom, a Placentia resident who would not provide his last name, he said, as he has received threats in the past.

Yes, but remember: He sent John Kerry to Cambodia in 1968!

Maybe they should also go after Herbert Hoover. His library must have done something wrong too.

Wow, demonstrators “for and against”, a whopping total of 13 people!!

But hey, if someone protests AGAINST the war, it’s front page news regardless of how many actual citizens show up.

Speaking of ex-presidents, isn’t Nancy in the hospital after a fall?

I was under the impression that most of Orange County was now a Mexican outpost. If that's the case, it would seem strange that the locals would be involved in US politics beyond immigration reform.

For some people, they’re mentally stuck back in time. I have family members like that. For them, it’s 1960 when the Democrats are in office, and 1968 when they aren’t. Nixon isn’t even a person anymore in liberals eyes, he’s transformed into an immortal evil boogeyman.

It's Nixon's fault that Washington's Birthday is now called "Presidents' Day"--as if all the Presidents deserved to be honored. I think when Congress passed the law moving holidays to Mondays, it was called Washington's Birthday, but Nixon wanted it to honor both Washington and Lincoln, and since then it has been taken as referring to all 42 men.

The current President is called the 43rd President but he's actually the 42nd--Grover Cleveland gets two numbers.

In 1960 the President of the United States was a Republican, Dwight Eisenhower. In 1968 the President was a Democrat, Lyndon Johnson.

Protest at Nixon Library

And what could we protest about at the *Crinton liebary and massage parlor? Ew - I know. How about the release of all the secret files that would 'prove' *Hillary's VAST left-wing experience?

I was referring to the elections. 1960 as a liberal’s fantasy, like the Obama people want to portray him as, 1968 as a nightmare, with evil cops beating up innocent protestors and the Man taking the presidency.

"The current President is called the 43rd President but he's actually the 42nd--Grover Cleveland gets two numbers."

Trivia question. Dick Cheney is what number vice president? It's a toughie because of VP's that assumed the presidency, and presidents who had multiple veeps.
