Unfortunately it’s going to get much worse in Cuba before it gets better. The best indicator we’ll get is the number of Cuban thugs operating in other countries being recalled home to help Raoul keep power.

I think Fido has either died or is closer than he’s been in months.

He's vowing to stick around and spew propaganda:

No me despido de ustedes. Deseo solo combatir como un soldado de las ideas. Seguiré escribiendo bajo el título “Reflexiones del compañero Fidel” . Será un arma más del arsenal con la cual se podrá contar. Tal vez mi voz se escuche. Seré cuidadoso.

I do not take my leave of you. I only desire now to fight as a soldier of ideas. I will keep writing under the title "Reflections of Comrade Fidel." It will be one more weapon available in the arsenal. Perhaps my voice will be heard. I will be careful.

Do they have their little fingers in other nations like they used to? It was my understanding that their ability to project outside their borders pretty much ceased when the USSR rubles dried up.

I don’t necessarily disagree with your overall take on this. It quite likely could get worse before better.
