Fidel Castro resigned Tuesday as president and commander in chief of Cuba in a message published in the online version of the official daily Granma.
If grandma said it, that's good enough for me!
He’s still the official head of the Communist Party. So, assuming he’s still alive, he’s still very much in power. He just doesn’t have the titles.
I posted my comment when the only link offered was a headline on Drudge. I won’t trust Granma farther than I can throw it, with one narrow exception — if they carry a government statement, it’s an authentic government statement. Like Xinhua, or IRNA, or TASS back in the Soviet days.
I couldn’t find the announcement on the international version of the Granma page, and I couldn’t figure out to get to the version offered inside Cuba. But AFP, BBC, CNN, all of whom have a presence inside Cuba, confirm each other’s accounts, so I’m inclined to consider it credible.
