Diplomacy fetish {Obama's foreign policy}
Washington Times ^ | February 19, 2008 | Peter Huessy

...Nothing illustrates better the vacuous views of Sen. Barack Obama, who says that we should "talk with the Iranians" without preconditions. Apparently, the paramount issue now before the United States is whether an administration in power will talk with the Iranian government. In an interview, Chris Wallace asked President Bush, "Should we talk with Iran?"...The president's response was correct: It is not an issue of whether we should talk with the Iranians. The issue is what we should be talking about and whether we should allow discussions to morph into a policy of appeasement.

For example, in 1979, shortly after the Iranian thugocracy kidnapped over 50 American diplomats {and held them hostage for more than 400 days}, the Carter administration negotiated with the Iranian mullahs and agreed to indemnify them from any lawsuits arising out of the kidnapping. Significant financial inducements were provided...Although our diplomats were eventually released, Iran — through its proxies Hezbollah, Hamas, Syria and Libya — continued to murder Americans in Beirut, over Lockerbie, Scotland, in Israel and in Lebanon.

During the Clinton administration, a commission established by Vice President Al Gore and Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin was designed to limit Russian weapons sales to Iran....the Russians used the proceedings to provide intelligence to the Iranians on how to successfully hide their missile and nuclear-weapons programs, while at the same time eliminating sources working in the weapons factories that were providing critical information...

...as Henry Kissinger reminded us: "A free standing diplomacy is an ancient American illusion. History offers few examples of it. The attempt to separate diplomacy and power results in power lacking direction and diplomacy being deprived of incentives." Unfortunately, some believe that sitting down with the mullahs without preconditions contains a magical power that will somehow transform our enemies into friends....

How is Obama going to pull off using diplomacy with Iran if our diplomats decide they are too chicken to go?

I’m guessing that should Obama actually win the election and assume the Presidency in January, then he will have a very steep learning curve, and find out fast that talk does NOT go very far with the mullahs or any other Muslim leaders.

Jimmy Carter’s learning curve was a disaster on a downward trajectory. And Clinton never learned, which got us 9.11. Why do I have this feeling that Obama and Michelle think we deserve to be attacked?

They may very well believe that...

Regardless, as soon as Muslim terrorists start attacking the U.S. homeland again during an Obama Presidency, particularly if they target schools, hospitals, and/or shopping malls, just wait and see how fast Obama has to aply the iron fist again. Otherwise, he'll be a one-term wonder and the Rats will be out of Congress for a long time, if they try to do "soft-power" retaliation in the face of a renewed hard-core terrorist threat.

But can you apply an iron fist if you can’t even put your hand on your heart to salute the flag?

This did not occur because we talked to our adversaries, but because we combined diplomacy, military power, economic warfare, common sense and faith in ourselves.

True believers do not believe the ‘propaganda’ coming out of the CIA, FBI, and especially the military intelligence. They don’t understand how to use the ‘weapons’ as listed above because someone might become offended. Even another catastrophy wouldn’t wake them up, they’d be able to lay blame on the Bush Administration and the past sins of the United States of America. The left would demand we simply step over the dead bodies and find a way to help the poor victims that feel the need to destroy.
