The rabbi at my temple tried something like this once. One Friday night at the reception after Sabbath services, he was talking about how God wanted married people to be happy in their marriages, and that meant they should have good sex lives. Figuring it was a safe choice, he asked one of the older white-bearded congregation members whether he was satisfied with his marriage. The guy said, “Well, Rabbi, I’ve been married for forty-six years now.” The Rabbi asked: “Yes, but are you still satisfied with your wife?” The old guy laughed: “Are you kidding? The last time she asked me if I’d like to go upstairs and make love,” I said: “Pick one, I can’t do both!”.

the more peopel stay married, the less importance they put on sex. it takes more than getting one’s rocks off to maintain a marriage, and this trivializes that.

uHHH....It is not about getting ones rocks off. Me and the wife are enjoying a lot better sex life now than in our earlier years. When we were younger we were not getting along too well and not having sex as often. Now that we have repaired our EMOTITIONAL side we have been having lots and lots of sex and could NOT BE HAPPIER. (not yelling emphasizing.

The emotional and physical go hand in hand regardless of what anyone says.

Besides it is fun. You should try it.

or even with a partner, for that matter!

I knew one Christian that thought it had to be followed, and I told him pretty much what you told me.

What I don’t understand is what this even MEANS in the Old Testament. (i.e. Why would God ask this of man?)

Right.

Let’s forget about those pesky 10 Commandments?

” for those with wives, live as though you had none”...in context he is imploring the people to overcome their sensuality. Read the whole thing with an open mind. Sex is way too big of a thing to us and is so addicting.

>>What do some of the old people say...?<<

Well, my wife and I both turned 54 and I would not be a gentleman to answer the quiestion directly. I will say this: That kind of intimacy (daily sex) both solidifies an already strong relationship and effectively reduces the significance of “less than perfect” other parts of the relationship.

And spouses who have sex “every day” are much less likely to stray, for logistical reasons if no other. ;)

Well, like many of the levitical laws, it was probably a way for the Israelites to live a life with less infections and diseases than their neighbors. This was likely one of those cases.

I agree with the concept, but don’t kid yourself. It can be just as bad to trivialize sex - and the need for it that God gave us. My wife and I love “Song of Solomon”.

I don't know about "pesky," but we are "not under the law, but under grace." The Ten Commandments are part of the Mosaic Law, which no longer applies to us as law per se. No, murder and adultery (etc.) are not acceptable, but it's not because of the Mosaic Law; it's because they're contrary to the "law of love."

On the other hand, Christians have no "legal" obligation to keep a sabbath in the Old Testament sense. Periods of rest are a good idea; the commandment sprang from a valid principle, and we're designed so that we function better with periodic rest. But we have no obligation to refrain from work every week from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown, or any other specific day or time.
