We have institutions with universal health care, free education and a hostage like existance too. They're called prisons!

On the good side, it shows how well old iron can last with proper care.

I like to keep good old iron running just to show folks how crappy many new cars are by comparison.

"great social achievements",?

Odd way to describe mass murder.

What good is a free education if you can’t use it?

Actually, there’s a public tv show all about how they keep them going (the cars), & I also know a few Cubans.

I wonder if the NYT happens to make the curious connection between the ‘great social programs’ and the disastrous economic situation?

Nah...too easy...Oh, and BTW, we’ve never seen anything like this on this side of the lake. </s>

His record has been a mix of great social achievements...

Such as secret police, and dossiers, and political informants in every neighborhood, and reporters behind bars...

Well, on second thought, one out of four ain't bad...

On NPR’s Morning Edition, Steve Inskeep let a coupla jaw-droppers by without apparently even blinking. Inskeep was interviewing a Brit named Vosson, who was in Cuba. Vosson pointed out that there hadn’t been much morning reaction yet to Castro’s resignation because the resignation was posted on the Granma (Cuba’s “Pravda”) website, and Cubans aren’t allowed home access to the internet, but Inskeep cheerily continued with the next question, sounding like he was accustomed to small countries throttling the free flow of information and ideas with such a tight fist. And a bit later, Vosson said something about Raul Castro’s economic upgrades being intended to get more money into peoples’ wallets and more food onto their tables. Inskeep let that slide right by, too. More food on their tables? Cubans not able to eat as much as they might like? Why not? The poor in many other nations seem to have the opposite problem.

When you Hillary talk of universal health care, think of Cuba’s.

I wonder if the NYTimes cares about the quality of the education and healthcare. And did they go into how Fidel treats homosexuals, especially the ones with HIV?

Or why he never helps out the Haitians, and why the Haitians stay clear away from there.

Sorry, it's just my rant for today. The word is NOT, resigns. That's what an elected official does. The term for a despot that has ruled with terror and intimidation, starvation and cruelty and now no longer has the energy to kill people, is step down. NOT retire, either. Grandpa retires. Castro, since he wasn't put down has finally stepped down.

The Libs would go ballistic if they knew that Castro put 100,000 homosexuals in labor camps in the 1960’s.

Tyrants take power by appearing to be on the left, and then destroy the ‘immoral”. Stalin, Hitler did the same. (Hitler was a national socialist, too.)

Let’s not forget that the Soviet Union used Cuba as its showpiece for decades, and much Russian cash was flushed down the drain in trying to prop up Castro. This, added with Reagan’s tough antiballistic missile Star Wars, was the downfall of the Soviet Union. They just couldn’t keep enough of their Soviet slave bloc countries making bread and guns for them AND Castro’s Cuba.

Economic rape = communism.

I guess he wants to run for the Democratic nomination for President.

(He’d be to the right of Obama.)
