Indianapolis - A majority of the Indiana House's members have signed a petition declaring their support for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
Although leaders in the Democrat-controlled House won't be giving the proposal a hearing this year, Representative Jim Buck says lawmakers wanted to show they support the amendment.
The Kokomo Republican says some lawmakers, both Republicans and Democrats, have been criticized for not doing enough to push for the proposal.
Democrats hold a 51-49 majority in the House. Most Republicans and seven Democrats signed the petition, which has 55 signatures as of Tuesday.
House Speaker Patrick Bauer has said the amendment is unnecessary and that lawmakers should focus on property tax relief during this short legislative session.
