Some 11th-Hour Advice to the Harvard Power Couple (Victor Davis Hanson on the Obamas)
The Corner at NRO ^ | 19 February 2008 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 02/19/2008 6:54:45 PM PST by SE Mom

Re: Michelle Obama's astounding admission that she hitherto had no reason to feel pride in the U.S., and Obama's supposed Biden-like lifting of a campaign refrain from someone else.

The problem is deeper than occasional slips. For most of the last 25 years the Obamas' contacts have been largely confined to universities (Occidental, Columbia, Princeton, Harvard, Chicago) as both students and employees, or to government-sponsored social agencies, or to the incestuous world of Chicago minority politics. These landscapes have proven liberal, sympathetic, and non-confrontational. I doubt very seriously in those environments that the Obamas have had any of their sometimes bewildering statements seriously cross-examined or questioned.

Michelle Obama, true, recites a litany of slights and grievances, but more likely she encountered highly educated white liberal audiences that were not about to cross her or challenge her assertions-a world away from steelworkers in Ohio, the Nascar crowd, the Mexican Americans in LA, the hungry wolves of the D.C. press corps for whom controversy trumps even shared liberal ideology — or Clinton, Inc. for whom power, status, and adulation outweigh everything, including liberal head-nodding, white guilt, and identity politics.

The result is that finally out on the campaign trail both are beginning to enter an arena where most of America does not faint at an Obama rally, but resents deeply a candidate's spouse suggesting that she previously had no pride in her own country, and would think that generous college admission practices, scholarships, and loans were cause more for gratitude rather than resentment.

Some old cynical campaign veteran, cigar in mouth-a Tip O'Neill-type, with the more scars the better-should sit the two kids down, explain the no-holds-barred rules of the arena outside the university and liberal government agency, remind them that African Americans and elite white liberals probably make up about at most a fourth of the electorate, and emphasize to them that by the public's own standard of living, the Obamas have been very privileged and done quite well-and that Michelle and Barack should start to say something uplifting other than the current mantra that the U.S. is a depressing and unfair place and has only one chance of 'hope" and "change" and "redemption" by allowing Barack and Michelle to lead us out of our collective ignorance.

He is (as you pointed out) striking a chord with millions of Americans. He is the result of the Oprah-ization of America.

He is tapping the restless, confused and ignorant. Whenever we see him speak we don’t see hundreds, we see thousands and 10’s of thousands standing in line to hear him speak. They are exemplary of the mob mentality- which we humans can get caught up in.

Hey, I’d gladly offer him his own kingdom of Massachusetts in return for his leaving the rest of the country alone.

We have to hope for there to remain enough loyal American Senators to block treaties. If the Democrats get 2/3 of the Senate in 2010 (I don't think they can get it this year) then they will have a golden opportunity to rule by Treaty and the Constitution will become quite irrelevant.

I’m assuming you mean she was one of those well educated, well spoken black people hired to fulfill the requirement that every major public institution in this country provide well paid sinecures for upper-middle black tokens to lecture the rest of the society about racism?

And those 10’s of thousands all have their hand out to receive that which he has promised. We are in deep doo-doo.

I WISH some one would ask him at one of his speeches how he expects to pay for all this!

Nobody asks him because we all know the answer already: he is going to tax you to death to pay for all this.

God forbid that Mrs. Obama, who makes well into six figures, should have to pay back her college loans! Better that I, who make less than a third of what she probably does, should pay for them through my taxes. I'm white, you see, so I deserve to be taxed.

Again we see what a wonderful idea is affirmative action and how well it worked out here. Without it, these two clowns might be doing something useful with their lives. But no. Now they feel entitled to inflict themselves and their ignorant "plans for hope and change" upon us.

jeez

An awful lot of people, maybe a majority, think that the government creates wealth by printing dollars and that the government can pay for anything by printing more of them. Many of these same people also believe that the government has to raise taxes some or how else are they going to pay for everything? Liberals and public school grads seem quite capable of believing several mutually contradictory things simultaneously.

Excellent thread SE Mom.
McNasty and his people are definitely poised to sock it to Obama.
I can already see the attack: Obama is a weak wannabe FDR that lacks the moral foundation most of this nation shares.

"I keep thinking I’m wrong- no one running for president in our country could be THIS radical."

I know what you mean. Last year when I first started seeing Obama '08 signs I laughed and thought the people who supported him were a small fringe of the nut-job left. Now it seems that there are a large amount of people enthralled with this madman. Like Hitler, Obama is an eloquent speaker and makes a good first impression. Still, it absolutely amazes me that he could have so much support since so many of his positions are so anti-American. These are strange times.

Another thing that really bugs me is the amount of money that both Obama & Hillary have been able to raise. Where is this all coming from?:

Buying the Presidency?

Both Obamabots are unbelievably priveleged, pampered, and comfortable in comparison to nearly all the world and nearly everyone in this country. For Michelle Obama to have felt so little (or no) pride in our nation before now, for her to be so filled with pathetic and dishonest grievance politics, is simply pitiful.

Well put. I heard someone on the radio suggest that if Obama were elected President it would heal our country’s deepest wound, that being slavery. I repeated this to a black co-worker and the look on her face told me that wouldn’t be the case. Will that wound ever heal? How many years of affirmative action will we need? Forever? What would it take for all Americans to be on an equal footing? I’m white, too, and I suspect you are right.

McCaìn will get us about 4 years more time. Then the millions of new Democrats that he will ordain by Amnesty will usher in the New Democrat Era with the Republicans washed right out of national politics.

Yep- they have- as Hanson points out- led an insulated life. His activism in the streets of Chicago is what he uses for cred. And they are buying it hook, line and sinker..
