Dems could see immigration silver lining in McCain
The Washington Times ^ | February 15, 2008 | Stephen Dinan

Could McCain's nomination mean an immigration deal this year?

Greg Siskind has come up with a scenario that argues Democrats should be tempted, now that John McCain is the likely Republican nominee, is to rush an immigration bill through this year.

"Do you think the GOP is going to allow their rank-and-file members to attack their nominee day in day out over the immigration issue? If they do, the results could be disastrous as McCain will be going around the country trying to unite a very fractured party that is already pretty suspicious of his conservative bona fides. Can you imagine one Republican after another having to come to the microphone to denounce the McCain-Kennedy bill (and that's what Reid and Pelosi need to call it every chance they get)? And then McCain being dogged by reporters asking about it multiple times each day?"

Great post, I’ve been predicting this to the McCain supports who claim we can stop amnesty even thou we elect McCain. No chance, as we will have told every senator that they will not be held accountable for voting for amnesty. We proved it by making the architect of the amnesty bill, our nominee for president!

I do not think that even McCain would be stupid enough to vote for an immigration bill this year, let alone the entire GOP committing suicide along with him.

But you never know. Welcome to FR.

They are floating an immigration bill right now, and with the base discouraged, who knows if we can stop it this time?

LOL! Great first post! So many people will be pissed off at it. The mccandycainiacs will tell you to calmn down. People like me who despise mccain for his illegal-lovin’ weakness will enjoy his vulnerability if such a scenario arises. The republican-party hacks on the thread will lambast you for opening up a fresh new division in the party.

Not a bad first post. Not a bad first post at all.

Dems just might do this. They know they can “blame” the Republicans and the msm would be glad to make sure repubs get the blame. Its a win win for them.

If McCain could get the entire GOP to commit suicide, why wouldn't he?

"Do you think the GOP is going to allow their rank-and-file members to attack their nominee day in day out over the immigration issue?

This shows how out of touch the MSM and the political elites are with Americans outside the Beltway.

The GOP leadership does not control their rank-and-file. That is why the Amnesty Bill (S-2611) went down to stunning defeat inspite of its push by the President, the RNC, the Senate RINOs, and the cheap labor contributors.

The Democrats may be able to control their little puppets on a string, but conservatives have a mind of their own, and as of now, that is why John McCain ain't gonna get their vote.

Let these insiders go on with their delusion. They will be in for a big surprise come November.

Like they didn't "allow" the rank and file to sink Harriet Miers? Dubai Ports? President Bush's amnesty plan? Greg Siskind isn't paying attention.

Could see a “silver lining”?

That has got to be the understatement of the year!

Juan McAmnesty is to the left of the Dems on this issue.

FTA: "Could McCain's nomination mean an immigration deal this year?"

The answer is No.

The new president won't take office until next year.

Neither candidate will want to stir things up before the election.
They know all they have to do is wait.

Then, no matter which of the three front running Libtards is elected, you can bet there will be a Shamnesty bill with all the bells and whistles an illegal can dream of.

It's as close to a sure thing as we will ever see.

.

Really?

He still is stating that his bill was not Amnesty.

And he is making absolutely NO overtures to the conservatives in the party except empty platitudes.

It started when the GOP leaders found that we would hold our collective noses and vote for them anyway...

“I do not think that even McCain would be stupid enough to vote for an immigration bill this year, let alone the entire GOP committing suicide along with him.”

nah, McCain’s too busy trying to get more gun control laws passed with Lieberman:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/679712/posts

and he's also trying to enact strict mandatory limits of greenhouse gases:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080219/NATION/576162886/1001

McCains' socialist agenda is pretty full right now. But as you said: "You never know."

You didn't see the embryonic "pray for President McCain" thread? Apparently he gave a great speech full of empty platitudes, except for his remarks directed at Hussein Obama's knack for giving speeches full of empty platitudes. No change in policy positions - just evidence of a rise in donations allowing him to hire some real speech writers.

A certain breed of Republicans are certainly quick to throw their panties off for the guy who for years seemed keen only to put us in the women's shelter, he now showing no sign of changing his ways (but he brought flowers!).
