Walter Jones not ready to back McCain

CAMDEN, NC — Even as fellow Republican John McCain closes in on his party's presidential nomination, U.S. Rep. Walter Jones is still not convinced the Arizona senator is the GOP's best choice to take on the Democrats' choice for president in the fall.

Jones, R-N.C., is still supporting fellow Congressman Ron Paul for the GOP presidential nomination, even though the Texas Republican had only collected 14 delegates to McCain's 908. McCain was poised to pick up 56 more Tuesday night in the GOP primaries in Wisconsin and Washington.

Interviewed following a ribbon-cutting event in Camden County Tuesday, Jones acknowledged that Paul's hopes for the White House are fading and that McCain appears to be the presumptive Republican nominee.

But McCain still has some fence-mending to do with conservatives, particularly on immigration, Jones said.

He said McCain cosponsored legislation with Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., which amounted to amnesty for illegal immigrants — something Jones said he opposes.

"If he's the nominee, I want to hear from him (on immigration)," Jones said.

And Jones has some "fence-mending" to do with Conservatives in his own district, for joining in sponsoring impeachment resolution on the Vice President, and for his defeatism on Iraq, actively undermining the morale of Troops (stationed is his District).

He has a strong primary opponent in Joe McLaughlin.

The Primary in North Carolina is May 6. Are you as tired as I am reading more about this Congressman in Al Jazeera than in the local paper?

So...?

This only proves Walter Jones has some sanity. I'd vote for Paul a long, long time before I'd vote for McCain.

This makes it appear McLaughlin doesn't have much of a chance too.

Too Late.

Everybody had a chance to back a better candidate than McCain but decided to to spread the Conservative Vote around to a bunch of guys who never had a chance.

Welcome to the party Pal!

The rest of the conservatives, whether they support Paul or not, have the same sinking feeling in their gut!

Walter Jones is an ass.

I wish I was in his district to vote against him, but unfortunately I’m stuck with G.K. Butterfield over here in the 1st.

as a citizen of eastern NC, I am deeply shamed.

Also, Jones will win his primary. He’s got loads of money and name id that stretches back to his father. McLaughlin might win some votes in Jacksonville but not enough elsewhere to be a threat.

Hey, I'm not complaining about his suppport of Paul. I'm even investigating a lawsuit that might derail the whole national primary system. I don't know anyone who's "ready to support McCain.

The problem is Jones, actually, who has a Primary opponent with a lot of support in the Grassroots. If McCain has things to address, Walter has things to address.

I just got an email from Jones touting all that he has done to support the tax cuts and other conservative principles during the past few years. I have always voted for him in the past, but this year I am voting for Joe because of Congressman Jones’s lack of support of the MISSON for which the young Marines in his district are risking their lives every day. The war against militant Islam is the most important issue of our time and he is on the WRONG side of it!! I would not count Joe out. He has been working hard for the past year and he has a lot of support in this area because people are really upset with Jones’s stand on the war as well as other things related to the WOT.
