Democrats: Michelle Obama's revelation that she was never proud of America until her husband's electoral success provoked wide reaction. But just as noteworthy was the nonreaction it got from Hillary Clinton.

For years, the former first lady and senator from New York has been carefully groomed for the presidency. High-ranking Empire State Democrats smoothed the way for the Chicago native with no connections to New York to skate through to the Democratic senatorial nomination in 2000, then easily win the general election in one of the bluest of states.

Such was the grand plan to get another liberal "New Yorker" — another FDR, as it were — into the White House. But with 10 straight defeats now, ironically to a fellow Chicagoan, Hillary's in big trouble.

On Monday, however, came the first real gaffe committed by the camp of that rival, Barack Obama. Would-be first lady Michelle Obama, speaking at a campaign rally in Wisconsin, told the crowd: "Let me tell you something. For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country."

Her husband's far-from-convincing response was that she wasn't really talking about the country; she really meant American politics was making her proud for the first time.

The local TV news tonight had a long segment about Obama , it looked like a commercial for him, it had a sound byte where they asked Michelle Obama three times if she was proud of america and three times she answered yes. No explanation of why the reporter was asking.
