The NYT is doing what I (and I'm sure many) knew it would do.
It is playing McCain like a piano.
I'm not a huge fan of his, but I will vote for him, but he will not win. On this site just days ago, I posted how I thought it would play out: The press will start writing attack stories, and then McCain would feel betrayed. He has good qualities, but he has been an utter fool who, due to vanity, bathes in the love of the press--he LOVES being seen as "above the fray" and "talking straight to the American people" (as if there is some actual American Voter who is pure and non-partisan, who can see only the good qualities of both parties and buy into just those) and all that happy Chris Matthews crap.
But he has never understood that he is loved by the press because HE IS USEFUL TO THEM. Now that he has the Republican nomination, due in large part to independents voting in open primaries, his usefulness to them is over.
The press know that this story is ALL they need. No attribution, no real facts, just a story that does what it needs to--make McCain seem "like all the rest," like a plain old dirty politician who is in the back room dealing with "special interests".
I've predicted that next we will see McCain "Himbo Eruptions"--except it won't be over women he's slept with, it will be about HIM. Wolf and Chris and Keith will be showing us video of McCain tossing reporters out of the bus, red-faced, screaming like a lunatic about "my integrity."
McCain will self-destruct because the press KNOW HIM. They know EXACTLY what to do to tick him off. And they will do this over the next months enough times so the American people will think (realize?) he is deranged, and that having this guy in charge of the military is a scary possibility.
I don't believe in the complex theories being floated. I think it's very simple. The lib media know that all they have to do to win is let McCain BE McCain--his self-righteousness will be his undoing.
McCain was chosen by the media, and the boys in the smokey back room——not us. He’s a loser.
The future is never what we expect. It’s usually much stranger.
Therein lies your explanation.
Deal with it.
We don't all go lockstep off the cliff like unthinking lemmings in support of a womanizing liberal (or moderate at best) politician just because he is the GOP standardbearer gained through abject lib media blockout and GOP state party-level obstruction of some of his more conservative primary opponents.
You should know better than that.
And you are welcome to examine my own nine solid years of posting conservative philosophy and comments here on FR--through "in Forum" archives, or in examining my nearly 40 years of supporting only conservative candidates, ballot propositions, legislation and social action unequivocably.
I do not support John McCain.
Welcome n00b who is judging conservatives, and the website.
You might want to get a grip on your posts...THINK before you post, and all that.
I’ve been through some of your postings.
You’re OK in my book. ;o)
Not in all the month you’ve been here huh? LOL
“I never thought I would see the day the people on this website would cheer on a leftist media smear machine on a repub and actively help elect a radical socialist dem.”
In three weeks time since you signed up, you’re making pronouncements like you’ve been here since the beginning.
McCain hatred?
How about just plain old distrust for a man who claims to be conservative but hates conservatives?
How about just plain old disagreement with a man who doesn’t share our values, just a party label?
I don’t hate John McCain. I am a life-long conservative activist, not a DU/Obama pest, but I will never, ever vote for a man who wrote and helped pass a bill outlawing political speech by groups 60 days before an election.
The thought that ANY American politician, let alone a REPUBLICAN politician, could actually think it proper to censor the NRA and Right to Life from criticizing politicians 60 days before an election makes me sick to my stomach...I could never vote for such an un-American, disgusting man.
True, we’ll probably get the kind of censorship seen in Europe and Canada, where people who criticize Islam or homosexuality are arrested, thrown in jail or fined, but McCain is of that same belief, that it is appropriate for government to censor “bad thought,” as Hitlery and Obama, and frankly, if or when it happens, I prefer it not to have come about by someone that I voted for, my conscience won’t allow it.
By the way, I don’t know ANY of my conservative friends who are voting for McCain...his views are so far off conservative principles that in essence it would be like voting for our ideological opposites.

The Viking Kitties watch with interest...
Keep right on chastising age old FReepers for standing by their principles and not embracing McCain for very good reasons.
Yep, that will win support for McCain fer sure!
Veterans FReepers are absolutely welcome to say "I told you so" when the occasion warrants it.
You have a lot of nerve for a recently signed up FReeper.
Save your lectures, no one appreciates it.
I plan to vote and encourage everyone else to vote FOR CONGRESS. I think the Republicans will roll over and play dead for McCain, but they just might fight a Dem in the White House. McCain will follow the Democratic policies just as he has done in the past. And we will end up with one big liberal socialist party and the Muslims still taking over country after country. Bush should never have recognized Kosovo. McCain will be worse.
We have huge numbers of trolls on this website.
What is there to like about John McCain? Nothing. Ah, poetic justice that after what he did to Mitt Romney, he got the same treatment. Of course, the story might be true. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Must blindly vote Republican, must blindly vote Republican, must blindly vote Republican.
Never again.
