Our Congress Vote Must Go to Peden
Galveston Daily News ^ | February 22, 2008 | Heber Taylor

Posted on 02/22/2008 2:54:42 AM PST by anymouse

As no Democrat is on the ballot, those who vote in the Republican Primary will choose the next member of Congress from U.S. House of Representatives District 14.

That’s why The Daily News is taking the unusual, but not unprecedented, step of supporting challenger Chris Peden in this race. While The Daily News doesn’t often endorse in primary races, this election will be the one that decides the district’s representation in Congress for the next two years.

Peden, a certified public accountant who has done a solid job as a city councilman in Friendswood, is running against Dr. Ron Paul, one of the most principled political figures in Washington.

Our decision to endorse Peden shouldn’t come as a surprise. In 2006, we recommended Shane Sklar, a Democrat, in his unsuccessful bid to unseat Paul.

There is much to admire about Paul. Whether you agree with him or not, it took enormous courage to oppose the war in Iraq. His stands on civil liberties are equally courageous and timely.

His voting is scrupulously in line with smaller government. His views are consistent with those of the Libertarian Party. He was once that party’s presidential candidate.

We can say without reservation that he is courageous and principled.

We can’t say he is an effective representative of the district.

Paul makes it a point to cast no votes on government spending, even if those funds are going to be spent in his own district or in a neighboring district.

Neighboring congressmen return the favor.

Even when the GOP had a majority in Congress, it was clear that the district was being punished because of all those no votes. Since the Democrats won a majority, that punishment hasn’t stopped.

In the next two years, leaders in Galveston County will join those from other counties in District 14 in asking for a lot of federal funding. They’ll ask for help on projects such as research at the Galveston National Laboratory and on NASA’s mission to Mars.

Grassroots leaders should have an effective ally in their congressional representative. Peden is the better choice.

From National Review:

http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=YzI5MTUyOTY3YTA0MTYzODkyNmNkNWMxYWJiZTAwMGE=

I hate to dash the spirits of what few Peden supporters exist out there, but the desperate propaganda being promoted by the Peden campaign on how well Peden is doing in the polls is no where near reality. Peden is NOT leading Dr. Paul in this race. In fact, most voters still don't even know who Peden is. How do I know this? Because I am Ron Paul's campaign manager and I have personally overseen 4 different political surveys in district 14 in recent weeks. All 4 surveys have shown the same results: Ron Paul has a high favorable rating and high marks on his job approval. And if the election were held today, 60+ percent of the GOP voters say they would vote to reelect Ron Paul, while only 18-20% chose Peden. The remaining 20% or so say they are undecided or refuse to give an answer to these scientific and statistically accurate surveys.

For those who follow the Ron Paul congressional campaigns you will remember that Shane Sklar, Dr. Paul's Democrat opponent pulled this same kind of deceptive game toward the end of his campaign, putting out press statements saying he had polls claiming his was tied with or even ahead of Ron Paul.

For example:
Burnt Orange Report::: TX-14: Shane Sklar Can Beat Ron Paul
Shane Sklar leads Ron Paul 54-30% in an informed Congressional vote.

And let me see now...Sklar got beat by Ron Paul by how much? This press clip may jog your memory of the election outcome...

Ron Paul .... defeated Democratic rancher Shane Sklar with 60 percent of the vote. ...

So, those of you who believe Peden's supposed lead in the polls should really place some bets on this one...BIG bets. And then when Peden, who is still virtually unknown to the voters and has almost no money in his campaign, (other than what he has loaned himself) loses the election and you lose a lot of money...then, maybe, reality might become a little more clear.

Just presenting the facts to help provide a little political reality check.

Oh, and BTW, Ron Paul can not and will not access money he has raised for his presidential race for use in his congressional campaign. It is not allowed under federal election rules. But then again, he doesn't need to, because his congressional campaign has raised over $1 million dollars over the past two weeks. Check it out at:

Sincerely,

Mark Elam
Campaign Manager,
Committee to Reelect Ron Paul

Yep, the endorsement took Sklar real far.

The news is HUGH!

If Paul loses, it will, no doubt, be a result of his constituents hearing some of his views that don’t come out during a congressional race. Would that the same phenomenon could apply to Hillary.

Wasn't one of the accusations leveled against Paul by some on FR was that his district received a great deal of government funds?

but this is the site where Paul supporters told us he was going to roll up big numbers in Iowa and NewHampshire, so deception cuts both ways and Paul supporters aren’t above more than a little lying.

Yes. More Gov’t spending.

This actually is an endorsement for Dr. Paul. Nice post.

LOL- Couldn't the exact same thing be said about Paul's presidential campaign? Yet he soldiers on.::
I hate to dash the spirits of what few Paul supporters exist out there, but the desperate propaganda being promoted by the Paul campaign on how well Paul is doing in the polls is no where near reality. Paul is NOT leading any Presidential candidate in this race. In fact, most voters still don't even know who Paul is....

Maybe it is an uphill climb, but it seems the Paul campaign should know about that as they've based their entire movement on an uphill campaign to topple the establishment.

Vote Peden so we can have more pork barrel spending in our district.

It is going to be hard to beat Paul's record of almost a half a billion dollars in 2007.

Wow, half a billion in one year, and the endorsers don’t think Paul was bringing enough tax money back to his district...

Maybe they are concerned about what money he brings back. Shrimp farming subsidies versus NASA. De-funding our troops in battle versus supporting them. A lot of us would argue that NASA is an integral part of our national defense- the Mars mission part was the Chronicle’s opinion, not Peden’s.

In reality, Peden has a history of actually finding waste and eliminating it. It is what kept him in the city council, fighting to cut waste. He actually passed more local ordinances cutting waste and limiting growth in his time in city council than all the bills Paul passed in his decades as congressman.

Riight, “defunding our troops in battle”..

Nice, you do realize that all the chest thumping McCain hate will guarantee a loss in Iraq Right? When you look down at that poll on the side FR, and see 8% of Free Republic members will vote for Obama...

Do spare the “supporting our troops B$, a throw away line, most of the political donations made by our troops went to Dr. Paul.

Stuki, you’re all pretty much the same, you and anymouse can discuss now.

Already debunked. IF everyone was telling the truth on where they worked (Townhall already debunked that last quarter only finding a couple who they could verify were actually in the military), it still comes down to about .002% of our military- something no candidate can claim is 'support'.
