Russian energy ties with Iran send US a message

Dubai, Moscow, Feb 21 As the United States warns the world away from business with Tehran, Moscow's tightening ties to Iran's energy sector underline Russia's differences with Washington over Iranian nuclear plans and Kosovo's independence.

While the timing of Moscow's announcement on Tuesday may have been political, the deal for Russian state-controlled energy giant Gazprom to take on big new Iranian oil and gas projects was a long time in the making and dovetails with Gazprom's strategic ambitions, analysts said.

Gazprom, the world's biggest gas producer, will play a larger role in developing Iran's giant South Pars gas field and will also drill for oil.

The United States spectacular shootdown of a disabled satellite this week similarly sent the Russians “a message”.

Russia just wants to control Iran’s gas & oil. Secondarily, they enjoy poking a finger in America’s eye.

Well, what the Chinese did (from the 3rd attempt, btw) was only to match the US as of 20 years ago. The US has been able to do that since the 80s. According to a history of ASAT programs, the similar US test was in 1985.

What was done a few days ago is a success of the anti-missile system; a qualitative difference.

Let the Russians help the Iranians develop all the gas and oil fields they want.

It just means there will be bigger and more frequent explosions when the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Air Force bomb the snot out of Iran someday.

I can’t help you with the message. If it means nothing to you it means nothing to you.

China shotdown their own weather satellite in deep orbit duplicating what we accomplished in 1985. The Chinese kill left space littered with debris.

Our mobile Aegis based system rose from the choppy Pacific waters to a point high above our low orbit satellite and then swooped down on it striking it from above assuring the debris fell quickly to earth. This deprived anyone interested in reverse engineering any of the satellite bits found intact.
You must not believe in the value of our Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System. The DemocRATS don't believe in it as well. Do you think the Chinese and Russians believe in it? If you cannot see any deterrence in this technological display we simply disagree.

Regards

“Gazprom has an edge as it bids for a bigger role in developing the world’s second-largest gas reserves after Russia’s own.”

This is the primary reason Russia is playing footsie with the Islamists. The Mohammedans are nothing more than pawns for Putin as he continues to lock up the natgas supplies which Europe relies upon. Our insistence on a Palestinian state and and aid in the formation and recognition of Kosovo certainly hasn’t helped us with our primary ME ally Israel either.

Russia will continue to play this game with the Islamists as they continue to consolidate their control over Europe’s energy supplies. Right now Tehran has nowhere else to go and Putin will sink his hooks deeper and deeper into their flesh. Putin doesn’t really want Iran with the bomb but he’ll string them along and continue to gain concessions as they can’t do it without him. Ocassionally he’ll slap the Muslims down but they don’t really care as long as they hope he will ultimately give them the ability to annihilate Israel. All the while Putin’s treasury grows as he exports 10mm barrels of crude/day and he continues to gain leverage in the energy arena without undertaking a back breaking military buildup.

If we elect say Obama I think Putin will become much more brazen in the ME and Europe will look increasingly to Russia to deal with certain hotspots they’ve helped create but can’t effectively handle. If Putin can drag Germany on board Europe is screwed.

History is littered with the wreckage of empires that tried to tame the Middle East. Russia will just be another. Those Mohammedans will eat Russia alive, as demographics doesn’t lie.

Hitler was an invading force, like Napoleon’s French Army, entering into Russia. I’m talking about something else. The Muslims already live inside Russia, and Islamic dominated states ring the underbelly of mother Russia.

The ethnic Russian birthrate is below replacement level. Muslims there have 5, 6, 7 or more children. Demographics don’t lie and thus it is only a matter of time until Muslims dominate Russia. The only thing that might save Russia is an pandemic of some kind. These things seem to sweep out of Central Asia occasionally.

Good post. However, that’s the international energy biz and the players know the rules and stakes.

Russia has effectively dealt with expelling or starving any undesirable ethnic minorities.
