Yes but the VP also has to being some regional balance and strength to the ticket. McCain does well out west and in blue states, he is going to have trouble in the tradition red states unless he gives them something to vote for. Since the heart of Red state American is Dixie, he would be smart to bolster his appeal to that region by picking a Southern

So traditional Republican voters who do not get a 'conservative' enough vice presidential running mate for John McCain are going to, out of anger or perhaps apathy, vote for the Marxist democrat or stay home and let the Marxist democrat win by default?
