Must be wolves. I saw a program on the NatGeographic channel about Yellowstone. Showed where some of the wolf packs have even started going after bison. Takes a group effort but wolves are very smart.

Wolves, coyotes...?

My first thoughts as well. But then I remembered walking my dog in the mid 80s in Nose Hill Park in north Calgary. We walked on the lower part of the southwest slope - grassland cut by brushy gullies.

Occasionally a dog would jump a jack, and a merry chase (for the jack) would be on. The jack would always head up the hill, away from the gullies, and would eventually shift into some kind of superdrive and head off through the open grassland, leaving the dog far behind. Much like Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote.
