When I had major abdominal surgery for another type of cancer I had to spend at least the 48 hours beforehand fasting and purging with some other type of thermonuclear laxative — I don’t remember the name but it was a clear liquid that came in a relatively small bottle — didn’t need any big 1-liter mixes so I don’t know what that’s all about, but wow the stuff they gave me was also enough to launch a space shuttle.

Since I’m already a cancer survivor once and have been through so much more than a lil’ ol’ colonoscopy I have to say that it sounds like nothing at all. Still, I can vaguely remember what it was like to be uncomfortable with medical probing and personal exposure, back in the days before I became a guinea pig for dissection and chemo and more medical misery than I care to think about (but they did save my life!!).

Colons have been in the news alot lately. Don’t get me started on those infomercials talking about “impacted fecal matter” accumulating in my colon.

Oh, I didn’t explain. I KNEW you had had it done, I was just passing along your excellent suggestion about the Butt Balm and Wet Wipes for during the ‘prep time’. Didn’t want to mention you without pinging you, as well.

My sister had colon cancer 4 years ago so I’m considered to be at a higher risk. But I’m also afraid of the 17,000 foot tube.

Do NOT be afraid of the 17,000 foot tube. I've had two, and both times got the Fentonyl (sp?). Believe me. You will not remember a single thing about the procedure. The last time as I came out of the anesthesia, I thought that I was remembering some of it, but within 20 minutes, I had not a single memory.

For those of you who were inclined to spew root beer or any other liquid all over your computers while reading Dave’s essay. Just be thankful that he didn’t elaborate about the recovery room, as you lay there discreetly behind a thin curtain, with the admonition that you will not be allowed to leave until you pass wind. Believe me, while coming out from under that drug they give you, there is nothing funnier than a room full of people farting loudly! When the nurse came and asked me if I had passed gas yet I replied. “What? you didn’t hear that? I thought they could hear that down the street! Oh, and I’m sorry if I peeled the paint off the wall.” :)

There isn't a whole heck of a lot of aesthetic variety in anuses.

As a result of this article, I just had my first colonoscopy today at the age of 57. The stuff I had to drink starting at 3:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon wasn't bad at all because I was able to add a packet of flavoring. Of course that doesn't mean I'm going to substitute it for my martinis. I was also instructed to take 3 DulcoLax tablets at 7:00 p.m. last night. Why, I have no idea because by then I was already freeflowing on a very frequent schedule.........

The worse was this morning and not being able to drink anything..........I need my coffee!

Everything was cool during the pre-stuff leading up to the exam in the hospital and I don't even recall the doctor talking to me which the nurse said he did following my return to the recovery area. She then had to restate all he said and she also gave me an instruction sheet to follow for the remainder of the day.

Once I got home it was coffee time!!! Then toast and eggs.........

I think I'll take a nap now knowing I have 7 years of cancer free colon..........

While Barry complained about the music, my only complaint was the lack of any attractive nurses..........none, zip, zilch, nada.

If you've never had one, get one.
