In February 2007, Joyal appeared on NBC’s “Dateline” and accused the Kremlin of seeking to silence its critics abroad.

On March 1, 2007, four days after his “Dateline” appearance, Joyal was returning to his home in Adelphi, Md., after meeting with Kalugin in Washington, D.C. As he stepped out of his car in his driveway, two men jumped out of nearby bushes. One grabbed him from behind, and Joyal was shot in the abdomen.

Not so. If I recall correctly, according to Whittaker Chambers in Witness, in the 1930s, during the struggle for control of the Communist Party in Russia, the GRU (or whatever it was called) was assassinating American Communists in America who were on the "wrong" side of the debate in Russia. The hit-men were forced to act—to stop the spread of Vronsky-ism, or whatever.

With overseas friends like the Russkies, enemies are a needless luxury.
