Slight correction:

The best way to prevent more war in the Balkans is for NATOxxxx SERBIA to remain in control of Kosovo.

No, giving Kosovo back to the Serbians is the best way to cause more war. The Serbians have proven that they are incapable of governing Kosovo. The riots in Belgrade and burning of the U.S. Embassy are proof of it. It’s better for NATO to remain in control of Kosovo.

Even when Kosovo was under Serbian control, there was too much violence, bloodshed, and general instability. After the fallout of the Yugoslav Wars, the first obvious lesson learned was that the Serbs were incapable of governing a diverse country, with the only pragmatic solution being that eventually Kosovo would have to be split from the rest of Serbia, under the protection of NATO.

I view Kosovo independence as a tentative win for world-wide democracy and freedom. I think more people should be excited at the positive changes that could stem from this, but success really depends on how people choose to react to this on both an individual and national level. I find it amazing that the same groups of people are still fighting over the past some 800 years later; in America this mentality by and large doesn't exist, we learn to move on and bring positive change after conflict. One of the most detrimental aspects of human nature is the natural resistance against forgiveness, reconciliation, and moving on.
