I’ve seen some interesting theories. My personal favorite is that an off duty cop, directly behind Bobby, accidentally shot Kennedy after being knocked down by the mayhem. Interestingly he not only had a gun of the right caliber, he got rid of both that gun and the gun he claimed to have with him under suspicious circumstances. Neither was ever made available for ballistics tests.

And the cop? He left the country.

While I didn't know anything about the "off-duty" cop per se, I do know one of the officers on the LAPD detail that was assigned to protect RFK. He told me that RFK or someone on his staff to get away from him and stay away from him. Hence there was no LAPD officer anywhere near him at the Coconut Grove restaurant where the shooting occurred.

As I recall, (although I could be mistaken) RFK was shot with a .22 caliber revolver that held 9 shots. It seems strange that an off-duty cop would be carrying a .22. In those days most carried .38's.
