...another sign of the coming apocalypse.

Of course there is that pesky New Madrid fault to worry about. Once delivered an 8.1 quake to Missouri.
We just had a 6.0 here in Nevada.
You just never know!

I had a cousin sleep through the Northridge ‘quake. One mile from the epicenter. In the top bunk.
Native Californian, of course...

The building standards in the UK aren't particularly suited to seismic activity. My great-great grandfather's home in Ysbty Ystwyth, Wales is made of stacked limestone sheets with a nice slate roof. It wouldn't take much to knock it down.

We had an earthquake in my neck of the woods last Thursday. It was the first one I've felt since moving to Pocatello, ID. The quake was measured at 6.0 and did considerable damage to buildings in Wells, NV. It was just 10 to 15 seconds of rolling at 7:16 AM in the morning here. We did have a full moon and a lunar eclipse on that day as well.

Quakes can be exhilarating until you get one of the big ones. Sylmar tossed me out of bed and sent me running for the doorway. For whatever reason Northridge didn’t shake OC as hard.
We need a rash of 6 pointers so that we can thin out the herd in southern California. Every time we get a big one the Uhauls start heading east.

I was living in San Diego when the Northridge quake hit. My closet door was open. The quake knocked all my wife's boxes of shoes off the upper storage shelf. They all landed on me where I was sleeping in bed. Lots of fun. Later, I discovered the jolt ripped the whole shelf loose from the wall. I removed it and built a much more secure set of supports using 1" iron pipe.

Id like to buy a vowel...Why? It was full of vowels. For something more challenging try Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. That's a little train station on the Isle of Anglesey. My family hailed from the town with the longest legal name in Wales...Llanfihangel y Creuddyn. You'll be tested at the next spelling bee :-) Yes, I did it from memory.

I have some friends who moved here from New Jersey. They decorated their den by installing a long shelf a foot or so below the ceiling and setting vases and other substantial objects on it. I took a look at it, moved to a different chair, and asked them if they had ever heard of ‘earthquake missiles”.

Ysbty Ystwyth...for English speakers uhs-buh-tee uhst-with. Phonetic and easy if you understand the rules. Ysbty means "hospital". Ystwyth means "winding". The town is the location of the hospital along the Ystwyth river.

Let me be the first to suggest the obvious:

The house did shake! 4.7 in California is not something that gets too many terribly excited but in the UK where I suppose this sort of event is rare...they will talk about this for some time.
