LONDON - An earthquake struck Britain early Wednesday and was felt across large parts of the country. No injuries or damage were immediately reported.
The 4.7-magnitude quake struck at about 1 a.m. and was centered about 125 miles north of London, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
It was like a huge freight train outside the front door, Sky News reporter Lukwesa Burak reported from Leicestershire in central England. The entire house seemed to shake.

I don’t believe earthquakes are very common there.

Must have been the muzzie’s hitting the prayer rugs at the same time.
Was there any serious damage. The building in Britain are not the most shake resistant structures around tham i’m aware of.
LOL!
Now thats funny, I dont care who you are!!! LOL! Thanks!
Global warming!

4.7? That’s for sissies. Now Northridge at 6.7 and Sylmar at 6.6, those were earthquakes.
Sylmar tossed all the water out of a friend’s pool, sending it through the glass sliding door and out the front of the house. And that was some 40 miles south of the quake. That’s the stuff that will get your attention.
Blimey!
Okay, first Indonesia, now Britain. Is Iran next? How ‘bout Kosovo? Just sayin’...
(Said in a Pythonesque falsetto)
“Why thank ye Harry, and it wasn’t ev’n my birthday.”
But England is far more densely populated and the buildings much older. It's prone to greater loss of life and damage than the tumbleweed towns you mentioned
We rode out Northridge ‘94 in Sherman Oaks. Not an experience I’d care to repeat...

I’ll never forget the Northridge quake. Talk about scary. The deep sleep I was in allowed me not to feel the whole thing, thank God. Fortunately, nothing was broken, cracked or damaged in my apartment. I do sleep better now, being in the midwest, knowing that a killer quake won’t hit at any minute.
Now that's funny. We had a 6.3 earthquake here in my "tumbleweed town" back in 1986. The news crews from Los Angeles all came rushing to up to film the damage. Watching "Eyewitness News" that night I saw film of a house with the front lawn covered in bricks and a building out of town totally destroyed. The only problem was that the bricks in the front lawn were there because a friend of mine was doing a remodel job on his house and the "destroyed" building was a pioneer stone building that had collapsed some 90 years before.
