Analysis: Debate shows Obama's growing skills

CLEVELAND — After 20 debates, Barack Obama now can say he's able to hold his own onstage with Hillary Clinton.

Cool and crisp in a 90-minute showdown Tuesday night in Ohio, he answered her charges with countercharges of his own. He spoke in the quick sound bites that the format demands.

When Clinton sensed that she could box him into a corner on support for Israel — by questioning how strongly he rejected an endorsement by Nation of Islam founder Louis Farrakhan, a virulent anti-Semite — he realized it quickly and got out. And, in a bow to the old politics he claims to abhor, he glossed over the truth about his campaign's misleading accusations about Clinton and her campaign.

In short, he's become a better politician.

He isn’t skilled or experienced, but he has a lot of potential for growth.

Good for him! He’s still a dangerous socialist!

I thought he looked pretty flustered during that whole exchange. As if to say “ok ok I’ll reject him if that’s what you really want” (if I was versus Hillary, I would have directly challenged Hillary on hugging Suha Arafat)

There was a sense of “I’ll have what she’s having” throughout the debate.

Voters aren’t looking for debating skills. They want to see a fighter and assertiveness. Someone who understands their needs and what they are going through. That is why Bush was able to beat Al Gore in debates. Al had all the technicals but voters wanted a human being.

He could have knocked her out of the running with a single word: Medvedev.
If he’d known it! Guess he didn’t. :)

All in all it was like pitting Prof. Hill against Marion the Librarian. You can see that initial encounter here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKH9fkSHuH0

I think he basically said to hilllary that he would use the word “reject” if it made her happy. He put it right back in her lap and showed it as picky, silly a topic hilllreee tried to bring him down on. She FAILED!

He has a dream that one day both Liberals and Conservatives will come together for the good of the country and lay aside the difference in the politics of division and hate and embrace the call of Liberal Jihad....

Whats so wrong with a little socialism anyway? Don’t we all want to feed the poor, wasn’t Jesus a teacher and healer of souls and as we walk in the footsteps of Jesus don’t our children deserve the best public education that taxpayers can buy for them, and shouldn’t we heal all the sick by making sure everyone has health insurance and if they can’t afford it we can subsidize it with taxpayer money, and shouldn’t we really get out of this ill conceived war and stop wasting all those tax $$ on the Iraqi’s when we could use that money to secure our borders, and shouldn’t we treat immigrants fairly and give them every opportunity to become Americans that our ancestors had and if some happen to be illegal we should identify them and explain to them it is in their best interest to go back home and come back legally and we should create ways to make that happen and we should talk to those who share differences of opiniion with ours, we should reason with them that humanity is worlds greatest gift and that kindness will go a long way in solving all of our problems and we shall have peace and shouldn’t we invest in science and technology for the future and shouldn’t the Federal government make sure that the country’s roads and bridges and levy’s and coastlines are safe from nature’s attacks and shouldn’t everybody pay their fair share to make that happen.

Jim Jones attempted to create a utopian society in the jungle of Guayna almost a thousand follower died from drinking his kool-aid.

Obama’s kool-aid in the relgion of hope has the potential to be the death of an entire nation.

I agree with you. There she was all high and mighty about making her point and he sort of laughed her off...like putting a needle in a balloon.

Clever I thought.

BTW, a linguist posted something saying that Obama’s use of denounce was correct - a proposal that has been offered can be rejected but something with which you disagree is denounced.

you can denounce a person’s specific statements while accepting their endorsement and support. Obama wanted to have it both ways so that the NOI would help bring out the troops for his campaign.

Barack Obama now can say he's able to hold his own onstage with Hillary Clinton.

It's backstage where he'll be in grave danger from here on out...
