Netherlands: Vast Majority of Public Pools Welcome Burkini

THE HAGUE, 28/02/08 - Almost all swimming pools in the Netherlands accept women wearing the 'burkini'. In a poll held by TV programme Netwerk, only 4 of the 36 baths questioned said they would refuse this variation on the burqa.

Twenty-six of the 36 swimming pools said that women in burkinis were welcome, while six were undecided. The other four said they would not accept the Islamic swimwear that covers the entire body. Until now, six of the 36 pools have been faced with women wishing to swim in burkini.

A swimming pool in Zwolle refused a woman in a burkini last week, saying other visitors found this offensive. But after a meeting with the local authority, which said there were no grounds for the refusal, the pool decided to modify its clothing rules and allow burkinis in future.

Netwerk sent a reporter wearing the Islamic-style swimsuit to swimming pools to gauge the reactions. The fiercest reaction shown was by a Muslim man, who said the burkini was an example of oppression of women and tolerating it an example of the influence that orthodox Islam is gaining in the Netherlands.

I wouldn’t care if they all put on moose antlers before taking a dip. Just don’t let them demand their own private pools and don’t make me put those ridiculous antlers on.

This man is obviously a islamophobic maniac. -Sarc

That top picture reminds me of John Kerry in his Papa Smurf outfit.

I think these burkinis would be better if they had a higher lead content.

I have no objection to their wearing them, if they have no objection to my laughing.

Good for him. Unnamed, naturally, eh?

I would probably need a few drinks before I’d hit that.

For fear of reprecussion?
How long before someone mandates that the women must also cover their faces while swimming?

Who cares what they wear to swim in? I don’t. More power to ‘em. Beats the near naked swimmers.

It is one thing to demand women cover their face and quite another to demand they strip down to a skimpy swimsuit. Why does anyone care what they swim in?

“The fiercest reaction shown was by a Muslim man,”

It should read that the fiercest reaction was from a man who called himself a Muslim. I assure you that many if not most of his fellow “Muslims” would not consider him to be a member of the faithful.
